Tigers edge Astros for eighth straight win
May 8, 2014 - 4:39 AM Detroit, MI (SportsNetwork.com) - Victor Martinez's solo homer in the sixth inning proved to be the difference in the Detroit Tigers' 3-2 victory over the Houston Astros on Wednesday.Miguel Cabrera hit a two-run homer for the Tigers, who have won the first three games of this four-game series.
Rick Porcello (5-1) allowed two runs on seven hits with five strikeouts over 6 2/3 innings for Detroit, which has won eight in a row.
"It was a good win for us tonight," Porcello said. "We battled hard the whole game and came out with a good win."
Marwin Gonzalez and Dexter Fowler each had an RBI for the Astros, who have dropped five straight. Brad Peacock (0-3) gave up three runs on four hits with four walks over 6 2/3 innings.
"I felt like Peacock did a good job against that lineup," Astros manager Bo Porter said.
The Tigers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Ian Kinsler led off with a walk and scored on Cabrera's blast to right, which deflected off George Springer's glove before going over the wall.
Houston got one run back in the third when Gonzalez doubled and eventually scored on Fowler's groundout.
Martinez homered to right in the sixth to make it 3-1 Detroit, but the Astros answered with a run in the seventh. Marc Krauss hit a two-out double to right- center field, moved to third on Matt Dominguez's single and raced home on Gonzalez's single.
Joba Chamberlain retired Jose Altuve to prevent further damage, then struck out the side in the eighth.
The Tigers sent Joe Nathan to the mound in the ninth. Krauss worked a two-out walk. Pinch-runner Jonathan Villar stole second and third, but Dominguez went down swinging to end the game.
Game Notes
The start of the game was delayed by nine minutes due to rain ... Tigers outfielder Torii Hunter had a 13-game hitting streak snapped ... Houston recalled pitcher Josh Zeid from Triple-A Oklahoma City and optioned pitcher Josh Fields to Oklahoma City. Zeid recorded the final out in the bottom of the seventh.
