Feldman, Astros shut down Rangers
Aug 31, 2014 - 7:30 AM Houston, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Scott Feldman tossed his second career shutout in the Houston Astros' 2-0 win over the Texas Rangers on Saturday.Feldman (8-10), who spent his first eight seasons in the MLB with Texas, scattered three hits and a walk with five strikeouts in an efficient 115-pitch outing.
Jake Marisnick knocked in a run during a two-run seventh that gave Feldman all the runs he needed.
"I've been feeling better and better as the season's gone on, kind of just hope to keep that going the rest of the year," Feldman said.
Phil Klein (0-2) took the loss after surrendering two runs in 1 2/3 innings in relief of Robbie Ross Jr., who struck out five and walked three in five hitless innings.
Feldman retired the first 13 batters he faced until Ryan Rua connected with one-out single in the fifth.
"That is as good as I've seen him pitch," Houston manager Bo Porter said.
Ross, who was recalled from Triple-A Round Rock prior to the game, was effectively wild through his five innings. Klein replaced the newly promoted Ross to begin the sixth after the southpaw hurled 70 pitches, just 38 for strikes.
After a Robbie Grossman strikeout, Jose Altuve stroked a double off Klein for Houston's first hit of the night. Klein struck out Chris Carter and got Dexter Fowler to ground out to end the inning.
The Astros got on the board in the seventh with Marisnick's single and an error by Klein. Jesus Guzman walked before Carlos Corporan sent a ground-rule double into left. Marisnick followed with an infield single back to the mound that scored Guzman, then Klein's throwing error allowed Corporan to cross home for a 2-0 lead.
Feldman cruised through the eighth and worked around a one-out single in the ninth for his fourth-career complete game.
