Angels walk their way to win over Yankees
May 6, 2014 - 7:29 AM Anaheim, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - The LA Angels of Anaheim capitalized on New York's bullpen meltdown to post a 4-1 victory over the visiting Yankees in the opener of a three-game series. The Angels scored three runs in the eighth inning without a hit to break a 1-1 tie.
Three New York relievers combined to issue six walks (one intentional). Howie Kendrick, pinch-hitter John McDonald and Chris Iannetta all drew free passes with the bases loaded.
The bullpen's wildness came after Angels starter Jered Weaver (3-2) escaped a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the top of the eighth.
With Brett Gardner batting, New York manager Joe Girardi was ejected by home plate umpire Laz Diaz for arguing a called strike. Gardner wound up striking out and Derek Jeter, who had two hits and scored the Yankees' lone run, grounded into an inning-ending double play.
"Laz wiggled his finger at me as to scold me. I'm not a kid," Girardi said. "There was a lot of inconsistencies tonight."
Shawn Kelley (0-2) retired the next two batters after walking Collin Cowgill to start the bottom of the eighth, but Kelley then walked three more -- beginning with an intentional free pass to Albert Pujols -- before Matt Thornton and Preston Claiborne each walked a batter.
Ernesto Frieri struck out two in a flawless ninth to earn his third save.
Weaver gave up a run on six hits, walked one and struck out seven.
"It's the strongest I felt this year," Weaver said. "My fastball location was the best it's been this year. I showed a little emotion getting out of that eighth-inning jam."
David Phelps made his first start of the season for New York and pitched well. He retired the first 10 batters he faced and allowed just a run on three hits and a walk in 5 1/3 innings.
The Angels opened the scoring when Kendrick led off the fifth with a triple to right field and scored on an Ian Stewart groundout.
Jeter doubled down the left-field line to lead off the seventh and Mark Teixeira tied the game with a one-out single to right.
