Ryu shines as Dodgers blank Angels
Aug 8, 2014 - 6:13 AM Anaheim, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Hyun-Jin Ryu pitched seven strong innings and Hanley Ramirez went 3-for-5 with a two-run single to pace the Dodgers over the Angels, 7-0, Thursday night.Ryu (13-5) surrendered two hits and a walk, and had four strikeouts to win his fourth straight decision over a five-start span. The lefty hasn't lost since July 8 at Detroit.
"Hyun-Jin was really good tonight. He changed speeds, used both sides of the plate and kept them off-balance," Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said.
Adrian Gonzalez had a two-run single for the NL West leaders, who captured the final three games between the two rivals to win the Freeway Series for the first time since 2006.
C.J. Wilson (8-8) was charged with six hits and four runs across 5 2/3 innings. He's winless in his last five appearances.
"C.J. had a tough time with his command early," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. "He made some adjustments, but used a lot of pitches and had deep counts. They (Dodgers) did a good job on the mound the whole series against us. We didn't swing the bats well the last couple of games."
The Angels lost their third in a row for first time since a season-high four- game skid May 30 - June 3. The Angels, who fell three games behind Oakland for first place in the AL West, host Boston for three games this weekend.
Wilson walked Justin Turner and Gonzalez around a single from Yasiel Puig, all with one out in the third. Ramirez then lined a single to center, and Matt Kemp followed with a sacrifice fly to right for a 3-0 margin.
Ryu didn't allow a hit until David Freese doubled with one out in the fifth. Freese advanced to third on a groundout, but C.J. Cron struck out swinging to end the frame.
"It was a really good game," Ryu said through an interpreter. "The pace was good and I had a good defense behind me. I also had good command of my fastball and my change-up was the key."
Juan Uribe doubled to center field to knock in Kemp in the sixth.
The only other hit Ryu gave up was a double to Albert Pujols in the sixth, but with men on second and third, Josh Hamilton flied out to left-center with Puig making a leaping catch against the wall.
Gonzalez's two-run single in the eighth made it 6-0 and a bloop hit to right by Miguel Rojas plated Carl Crawford in the ninth.
