Angels crush Rangers to win sixth straight

Sep 10, 2014 - 6:16 AM Arlington, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Kole Calhoun homered for a second straight game and the Los Angeles Angels extended their win streak to six with a 9-3 win over the Texas Rangers on Tuesday.

Erick Aybar doubled in a pair of runs during a seven-run eighth inning for the surging Angels, while Collin Cowgill and Mike Trout both tripled in the stanza. Trout drove in his American League-leading 103rd run of the season.

"It's a potent offense, and when everybody is contributing ... I mean, Howie (Kendrick) is hot, Albert (Pujols) is hot, Mike (Trout) is hot, Kole (Calhoun) has been hot," said Cowgill. "Seems like everybody is hot at the same time right now."

Hector Santiago (5-7) remains unbeaten since the All-Star break after tossing five innings of one-run ball. The southpaw, who went 0-7 in his first 11 starts of the season, hasn't lost since June 15.

Santiago outdueled Colby Lewis (9-13) for the second time this season. Lewis was much better in this one than his last outing against the Angels, but still took the loss after allowing three runs -- two earned -- on five hits over seven-plus innings.

"He just got stronger and stronger. I think he's feeling healthy," said Rangers interim manager Tim Bogar.

The Angels crushed Lewis in a July 10 matchup, plating 13 runs on 13 hits against the veteran righty.

Calhoun gave Los Angeles a quick lead, crushing the third pitch of the game over the wall in left for a leadoff homer.

Brennan Boesch made it 2-0 with a sacrifice fly in the top of the fourth inning, but Adrian Beltre hit a solo homer in the home half of the frame to make it a one-run game.

The Angels broke it open against four Rangers pitchers in the eighth. Cowgill's infield single was the last batter Lewis faced, as Michael Kirkman came on and struck out Calhoun before giving way to Roman Mendez. Trout greeted him with a triple to deep right-center, then was thrown out at home on Albert Pujols' sharp grounder to third for the second out.

Mendez couldn't finish the inning, however, as Howie Kendrick singled and David Freese worked a walk to load the bases. Aybar blooped a ground rule double to right off against Robbie Ross to make it 5-1.

Ross then walked Chris Iannetta intentionally and Gordon Beckham unintentionally to force in a run. Cowgill cleared the bases with his triple down the right field line before Calhoun finally struck out for the second time in the inning.

Ryan Rua doubled in two runs in the bottom of the eighth for Texas.

Game Notes

The Angels have won 12 of their last 14 games ... The Angels have won six straight on the road ... Angels outfielder Josh Hamilton missed his fifth straight game with a sore shoulder ... Lewis, who was pitching on seven days' rest, fell to 0-5 in six starts this season when resting for six-plus days in between starts.
