Harrison, Pirates down Dodgers in rubber match

Jul 24, 2014 - 4:38 AM Pittsburgh, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - Josh Harrison drove in two runs and Francisco Liriano tossed seven strong innings as the Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers, 6-1, in the rubber match of a three-game set on Wednesday.

Travis Snider homered among his two hits and scored three times while Russell Martin had two hits and an RBI for the Pirates, who have won two straight and five of their last six.

"We plan on winning every series," Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said. "Our guys overall played a better series."

Liriano (2-7) surrendered just one run on four hits with four strikeouts to earn his first win since May 30, which also came against the Dodgers.

Matt Kemp drove in the Dodgers' lone run and Juan Uribe supplied two hits for Los Angeles, which mustered just five hits after scoring seven runs on Tuesday.

Dan Haren (8-8) lost his fourth straight start, giving up five runs on four hits and three walks across five frames.

"It's really gotten away from me the last four times out," Haren said. "I was having a great year, I felt great throwing the ball."

The Pirates opened the scoring in the first. Gregory Polanco and Snider both singled to lead off the frame and Neil Walker walked to load the bases. Martin worked a walk off Haren to usher in the game's first run. Ike Davis' sacrifice fly brought in Snider and Harrison's double into the left-field corner made it a 4-0 game.

Snider crushed a first-pitch cutter to right for a 5-0 Pirates lead with one out in the second.

Liriano did not allow a hit until a diving Snider missed Miguel Rojas' line- drive double in left field with one out in the fifth. Shortstop Jordy Mercer made a leaping catch to rob Drew Butera of a base hit and tossed the ball to second base to double up Rojas to end the inning.

The Dodgers got on the board in the sixth. Pinch-hitter Justin Turner singled to center, Dee Gordon doubled to left and Kemp's groundout scored Turner from third.

Andrew McCutchen's RBI double off the wall in right made it a 6-1 game in the seventh.

Game Notes

Dodgers outfielder Yasiel Puig (hand) did not start for the fourth straight game and shortstop Hanley Ramirez (wrist) was absent from the lineup for a third consecutive game. Both are listed as day-to-day ... Pittsburgh won the season series, 5-2, marking its first winning season against the Dodgers since 2000 ... Walker has reached base safely in 21 straight games and extended his hitting streak to seven games ... The Pirates have won 15 consecutive games when scoring in the opening frame. It is the longest such streak for the team since April 27 to June 19, 1975.
