Brewers rally to beat Dodgers
Aug 9, 2014 - 4:56 AM Milwaukee, WI (SportsNetwork.com) - Rickie Weeks belted a three-run homer, Gerardo Parra drove in two runs and the Milwaukee Brewers rallied for a 9-3 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday to open a three-game series between the division leaders. The Brewers scored four runs in the seventh inning to take the lead and added three on Weeks' blast in the eighth, winning for the third time in four games.
Adrian Gonzalez had three hits, including a a solo homer, and knocked in two runs for the Dodgers, who had a three-game winning streak snapped.
Roberto Hernandez went six innings in his Dodgers debut after he was acquired from Philadelphia on Thursday. He struck out five, walked none and gave up two runs on three hits.
Kyle Lohse also threw six innings for Milwaukee, allowing one run on six hits and two walks.
Hernandez was in line for the win before Milwaukee's four-run seventh.
"He attacked the strike zone, he worked quick and his stuff was good," said Dodgers manager Don Mattingly.
Weeks, in as a pinch-hitter, drew a one-out walk off J.P. Howell in the seventh, went to third base on Mark Reynolds' single off Brandon League (2-3) and scored on Martin Maldonado's squeeze bunt.
Back-to-back errors by LA shortstop Justin Turner with two outs allowed the Brewers to take the lead. The first one loaded the bases and Reynolds scored on Turner's low throw to first on the second one. Parra then delivered a two- run single to center field to make it 6-3.
"Really good job of getting some hits after those two (errors)," said Brewers manager Ron Roenicke.
Weeks drove Carlos Frias' 80 mph slider over the wall in left-center in the eighth to make it 9-3.
Dodgers shortstop Hanley Ramirez developed tightness in his right side and was taken out of the game after batting in the first inning in a move the team called precautionary.
The Brewers opened up a 2-0 lead on Hernandez in the first inning with a rally sparked by Parra's single and Ryan Braun's double. Parra scored on Aramis Ramirez's single through the left side and Scooter Gennett followed with a sacrifice fly to play Braun.
The Dodgers didn't get on the board until Gonzalez's second-deck home run to right field leading off the sixth, his 16th of the season. They took a 3-2 lead against the Milwaukee bullpen in the seventh on RBI singles by Gonzalez and Andre Ethier. The runs were charged to Rob Wooten and Zach Duke.
Game Notes
Turner started the seventh inning with a defensive highlight, diving to catch Weeks' line drive in the hole ... Jeremy Jeffress (1-1) got two outs in the seventh to pick up the win ... The Dodgers put right-hander Josh Beckett on the 15-day disabled Friday with a left hip impingement -- the same injury that caused him to miss 15 days last month -- and activated Hernandez to make the start.
