Gonzalez powers Dodgers past Mets
Aug 24, 2014 - 4:36 AM Los Angeles, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Adrian Gonzalez hit a three-run homer and drove in five runs as the Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the New York Mets, 7-4, in the middle test of a three-game set on Saturday.Scott Van Slyke and Erisbel Arruebarrena each brought in a run for Los Angeles, which won its third straight game.
"It was a good win for us tonight," said Gonzalez. "Baseball is about scoring runs and I try to do my best to drive runs in."
Zack Greinke (13-8) earned the win after giving up four runs -- three earned -- on nine hits with four strikeouts over seven innings of work.
Juan Lagares supplied a three-run blast and Lucas Duda also homered for the Mets, who lost their sixth consecutive game in Los Angeles.
Starter Jacob deGrom (6-6), who was activated from the disabled list prior to the game, allowed five runs on five hits and two walks while fanning seven across six frames.
"I was very impressed with Jacob," Mets manager Terry Collins said. "He had amazing stuff. The time he got hurt was on a couple of mistakes to Adrian."
Lagares connected on a 1-1 changeup and stroked it just over the left-field wall for a 3-0 Mets lead in the fourth.
The Dodgers countered in the home half. Carl Crawford worked a leadoff walk and stole second before coming home on Gonzalez's single to right. Matt Kemp singled and both runners moved up a base on Andre Ethier's groundout. Arruebarrena's sacrifice fly to center scored Gonzalez for a 3-2 score.
Greinke singled with one out in the fifth and Crawford worked a two-out walk before Gonzalez smacked a three-run shot to right-center field.
Duda led off the sixth with a blast to right, getting the Mets within, 5-4.
In the seventh, Miguel Rojas and Dee Gordon singled to place runners at the corners with one out. Van Slyke's check-swing dribbler up the first-base side was picked up by Josh Edgin, whose throw home was late and allowed Rojas to score. Gonzalez's sac fly to right gave the Dodgers a 7-4 lead.
Kirk Nieuwenhuis doubled off Kenley Jansen to lead off the ninth and moved to third after Curtis Granderson flied out to center. Jansen recovered to strike out Daniel Murphy and David Wright, leaving the runner stranded and earning his 37th save of the season.
