Cashner pitches Padres past Dodgers
Sep 10, 2014 - 5:54 AM Los Angeles, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Andrew Cashner provided his own offense and finally picked up a much-deserved win as the San Diego Padres downed the Los Angeles Dodgers, 6-3, on Tuesday.Cashner (3-7) had been winless since April 16 despite pitching to a 2.86 ERA over 11 starts. With run support at a premium, Cashner took it upon himself to get the Padres on the board with a two-run double in the second inning.
The right-hander produced another quality start on the mound as well, limiting the Dodgers to two run on nine hits over seven frames.
Jedd Gyorko hit a two-run homer to back Cashner's strong performance and end San Diego's six-game skid.
"I was looking for a fastball over the plate and I put a good swing on it," Gyorko said. "Any time you hit the ball hard, it's a good thing."
Adrian Gonzalez smacked a two-run homer in the sixth for Los Angeles, which saw its lead in the NL West shrink to 2 1/2 games ahead of the second-place San Francisco Giants.
Roberto Hernandez (8-11) only worked three innings and surrendered five hits and five runs, though only two were earned.
"Roberto got the ball up tonight," said Dodgers manager Don Mattingly. "He's usually a groundball pitcher."
Hanley Ramirez went 0-for-3 and committed two errors in San Diego's three-run second inning. He booted a ball hit by Rymer Liriano to keep the inning alive, and after Alexi Amarista reached on a base hit, Cashner found the gap in left field to bring in both runners.
Ramirez dropped the relay throw to advance Cashner to third, and Cory Spangenberg singled in the starter to give the Padres a 3-0 lead.
Gyorko followed Yasmani Grandal's leadoff walk in the third with a blast to center, and Rene Rivera tacked on a sacrifice fly in the eighth for a 6-2 cushion.
Justin Turner hit a pinch-hit, RBI single in the ninth to account for the final margin.
