Mets rally past Marlins
Sep 4, 2014 - 2:50 AM Miami, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - Travis d'Arnaud's RBI double sparked a two-run eighth inning that gave the New York Mets a 4-3 win over the Miami Marlins on Wednesday. After Christian Yelich tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the seventh inning, d'Arnaud put the Mets back in front a half inning later. Matt den Dekker, who went 3-for-4 with a double, reached on a drag bunt to start the frame. Lucas Duda singled to chase reliever Mike Dunn (10-6) from the game, and d'Arnaud greeted Bryan Morris by lining the second pitch he saw down to right.
After Kirk Nieuwenhuis was walked intentionally, Duda came home for a crucial insurance run after Dilson Herrera grounded into a fielder's choice.
Giancarlo Stanton led off the bottom of the eighth with a solo homer down the left-field line, giving him one home run in all three games of this series.
Jenrry Mejia pitched around a leadoff walk in the bottom of the ninth to record his 23rd save of the year. Carlos Torres (6-5) picked up the win despite serving up Stanton's National League leading 36th homer of the season.
Nieuwenhuis hit a two-run homer for the Mets, winners in three of four. Jacob deGrom went six innings, allowing a run on six hits with six strikeouts.
"I got up there in pitch count early," said deGrom. "I was trying to stay a little more focused tonight. I had a lot of 3-2 counts."
Tom Koehler struck out 10 for Miami and gave up two runs on five hits over seven innings of work.
"They have played us tough," Marlins manager Mike Redmond said of the Mets. "Guys are battling. This is a new spot for us playing games with a little bit of pressure."
Juan Lagares and den Dekker opened the game with consecutive hits to put the pair in scoring position and no outs, but the Mets failed to cash in. Koehler struck out the side to strand both runners.
With two outs and a runner on second in the third inning, Casey McGehee chopped a grounder back to the mound. The ball deflected off deGrom's glove and gave McGehee enough time to beat out Herrera's throw to first, which got away from Duda anyway to allow the game's first run.
Nieuwenhuis went upper-deck with his two-out blast in the top of the fourth. Koehler retired the first two in the inning before d'Arnaud drew a walk. Nieuwenhuis followed with a homer that gave the Mets a 2-1 lead.
DeGrom was pinch hit for in the top of the seventh inning, and the bullpen was unable to hold the lead for him. Buddy Carlyle gave up a double to Adeiny Hechavarria, who moved to third on Reed Johnson's groundout. New York then went to lefty Dario Alvarez, who gave up Yelich's game-tying single in the only at-bat of his major-league debut.
