Marlins rally in 9th against scuffling Brewers
Sep 10, 2014 - 5:41 AM Milwaukee, WI (SportsNetwork.com) - Casey McGehee crushed a go-ahead two-run homer in the ninth inning and the Miami Marlins escaped Miller Park with a 6-3 win over the downtrodden Milwaukee Brewers on Tuesday. The Brewers have fallen on hard times of late, having dropped 13 of their last 14 games to fall further back in the playoff race.
They squandered a bases-loaded, no-out chance in the eighth inning and watched closer Francisco Rodriguez implode with two outs in the ninth.
Rodriguez (4-5) missed high on a payoff pitch to Giancarlo Stanton, and McGehee followed the walk with a shot to deep left-center to break a 3-3 tie.
Marcell Ozuna made it back-to-back homers with a screamer over the left-field fence, and Steve Cishek stranded a pair in the ninth to post his 34th save.
"We'll just have to keep grinding it out," Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said. "We had a lot of opportunities. We're just not getting that big hit."
Ozuna finished 3-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI as the Marlins climbed within 3 1/2 games of the Pirates for the second wild card spot.
Aramis Ramirez had three hits and drove in two runs for the Brewers, who despite their recent slide are still within a manageable 1 1/2 games behind Pittsburgh.
Bryan Morris (8-1) put the first three Brewers on in the eighth but somehow survived unscathed. Rickie Weeks and Carlos Gomez both hit into forceouts at home, and Scooter Gennett flied out meekly to right to keep it a tie game.
"It looked like we were in trouble, and (Morris) did a great job of gathering himself and making pitches," Marlins manager Mike Redmond said. "That was the ballgame."
Christian Yelich singled leading off the third, stole second and scored on Donovan Solano's base hit to right field to give the Marlins a 1-0 lead.
Matt Garza had McGehee picked off trying to steal second base later in the frame, but his throw skipped past the bag and into center field. The error extended the inning and Ozuna drove in McGehee with a base hit.
The Brewers got the runs back in the bottom half when Ramirez doubled in Gennett before Jonathan Lucroy scored on a Gerardo Parra groundout.
The Marlins retook the lead in the sixth as Garrett Jones found the left-field gap to bring in Ozuna all the way from first base.
Zach Duke struck out Jeff Baker to leave the bases loaded in the seventh, and the Brewers evened things again in their half. Gennett doubled and Ramirez fisted one to center field with two away to bring in the tying run.
Game Notes
Garza needed 84 pitches to get through four innings and was pulled having allowed two runs -- one earned -- on six hits ... Tom Koehler scattered two runs on six hits and three walks in five innings of work for the Marlins ... Milwaukee went 2-for-14 with runners in scoring position and stranded 13.
