Asche's smash in 10th helps Phils down Marlins

Sep 13, 2014 - 2:39 AM Philadelphia, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - Cody Asche's two-run homer in the bottom of the 10th inning propelled the Philadelphia Phillies to a 3-1 win over the Miami Marlins on Friday.

Ben Revere poked a one-out single to center off Dan Jennings (0-2) and Asche followed by smashing a hanging slider over the out-of-town scoreboard in right to help the Phillies snap a two-game skid.

Jake Diekman (5-4) earned the win after pitching a scoreless 10th. The Phillies bullpen of Ken Giles, Jonathan Papelbon and Diekman did not allow a baserunner over three innings in relief of starter Cole Hamels.

"Overall a good baseball game," said Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg. "Cody with a tremendous swing. Cole was solid for seven innings. The bullpen was outstanding."

Both starters worked seven innings. Hamels took the no-decision after allowing one run on nine hits while striking out six, while Miami starter Henderson Alvarez was charged with a run on seven hits and struck out four.

The Marlins were playing without slugger Giancarlo Stanton, who sufferd facial lacerations after getting hit in the face with a pitch by Mike Fiers in Thursday's loss to the Brewers.

Miami, which has lost three straight, said that Stanton returned home to Florida on Friday and is feeling better.

Miami threatened to score in the fourth, but a nifty play by Asche at third kept the game scoreless. With a runner on first and one out, Jeff Baker ripped a double into the right-field corner. In the following at-bat, Jarrod Saltalamacchia hit a sharp grounder to Asche, who ranged to his right up the third-base line and fired home to get Casey McGehee. Hamels then struck out Ed Lucas to escape the inning unscathed.

Alvarez followed Hamels by getting out of a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the home fourth. Chase Utley and Ryan Howard singled before Marlon Byrd was hit by a pitch to fill the bases. After Domonic Brown flied out, Alvarez got Carlos Ruiz to ground into an inning-ending double play.

Baker singled with one out in the sixth, then moved to third on an infield single by Lucas two batters later. Adeiny Hechavarria followed with a single to right that scored Baker and gave the Marlins a 1-0 lead.

Philadelphia tied the game up, though, on some sloppy play from the Marlins in the home sixth. Utley doubled to right and advanced on an error by Lucas. Following a strikeout of Howard for the second out, Alvarez uncorked a wild pitch that allowed Utley to cross home.

Game Notes

Hamels has now allowed three runs or fewer in 20 straight starts dating back to June 1. The veteran left-hander is also unbeaten in his last nine home games, but has only compiled two wins over that span ... Miami went 2-for-10 with runners in scoring position, while the Phillies went 0-for-7 in those instances.
