Phillies sneak past Marlins
Sep 14, 2014 - 2:41 AM Philadelphia, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - Marlon Byrd and Maikel Franco each knocked in a run to back a strong performance out of Kyle Kendrick, and the Philadelphia Phillies defeated the Miami Marlins, 2-1, on Saturday.Kendrick (9-12) was victorious after holding the Marlins to one run on seven hits while striking out six over 6 1/3 innings of work.
"Well-pitched game," Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg said. "Good at-bat by Franco, then a big double by Byrd."
Brad Hand (3-7) limited the Phillies to two runs on four hits over six innings in the tough-luck loss, Miami's fourth straight setback.
The Phillies got on the board early with a two-run first inning. Ben Revere started things off with a single, moved to second on a wild pitch by Hand, then scored on Franco's base hit to right. Byrd doubled two batters later to knock in Franco for a 2-0 spread that would hold for the remainder of the contest.
"We had a couple of chances to add on some runs," said Marlins manager Mike Redmond. "I thought Brad Hand pitched great other than the first inning when he gave up a couple of runs."
Garrett Jones got a run back, however, in the away second with his 15th homer of the season.
Philadelphia stranded a runner on third with one out in the sixth, then Miami put the first two runners on in the seventh. The Marlins squandered the opportunity to score, however, after Marlon Byrd gunned down Justin Bour trying to score from second on a hit by Reed Johnson off reliever Jake Diekman.
Ken Giles worked around a two-out walk in the eighth and Jonathan Papelbon pitched a scoreless ninth to nail down his 37th save of the season.
