Parra's homer lifts Brewers over Giants

Aug 6, 2014 - 5:44 AM Milwaukee, WI (SportsNetwork.com) - Gerardo Parra's first hit in a Brewers uniform couldn't have come at a better time.

Parra's tie-breaking homer in the seventh gave Milwaukee a 4-3 victory over the San Francisco Giants in the opener of a three-game series.

Parra, acquired at the trade deadline from Arizona, also used his glove in the victory, making a nice sliding catch in foul territory to help Jeremy Jeffress get out of the eighth.

Carlos Gomez hit a two-run homer and knocked in three runs for the Brewers, who hold a one-game lead over St. Louis for first place in the NL Central.

Milwaukee starter Jimmy Nelson (2-2) gave up three runs on six hits with five strikeouts over seven innings. He was scratched from his scheduled start on Saturday with a blister on his right middle finger.

"I was able to come back and get a few ground ball. They made some great plays behind me today," Nelson said.

Pablo Sandoval hit a three-run homer for the Giants, who had a two-game winning streak snapped.

"We did a good job to come back and tie that game," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. "Pablo really delivered for us. You'd like to win the game after coming back like that."

Tim Lincecum got the start for San Francisco and gave up three runs on seven hits with eight strikeouts over six innings. Jean Machi (6-1) suffered his first loss of the season after giving up one run over two innings.

The Brewers took a 2-0 lead on Gomez's homer in the third. Nelson hit a two- out single to right and crossed the plate on Gomez's blast down the left-field line.

Milwaukee tacked on another run in the fifth. Rickie Weeks led off with a double, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on Gomez's bunt single.

The Giants tied things up on Sandoval's three-run homer in the sixth. Joe Panik singled and Brandon Belt doubled before Sandoval's blast to left.

With two outs in the seventh, Parra smacked Machi's offering over the wall in right.

San Francisco put men on first and second with one out in the eighth. Parra's big catch and a Buster Posey strikeout allowed Jeffress to get out of the inning.

The Giants had one on with two outs in the ninth against closer Francisco Rodriguez, when Panik was ruled safe on a grounder to second. But the Brewers challenged the call and it was reversed to end the game. Rodriguez recorded his 33rd save of the season.

Game Notes

The Brewers started a six-game homestand on Tuesday ... Milwaukee placed pitcher Matt Garza on the 15-day disabled list with a left oblique strain on Tuesday. In a corresponding move, the Brewers recalled pitcher Rob Wooten from Triple-A Nashville.
