Giants complete sweep with rout of Brewers

Sep 1, 2014 - 5:57 AM San Francisco, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Hunter Pence finished with four hits, three runs scored and two RBI as the San Francisco Giants completed a three- game sweep of the Milwaukee Brewers with a commanding 15-5 victory on Sunday.

Pablo Sandoval hit a two-run homer among his three hits, drove in three runs and scored three times. Andrew Susac also brought in three runs with three hits for San Francisco, which won its sixth straight game and swept Milwaukee at AT&T Park for the first time since Aug. 24-26, 2007.

Madison Bumgarner (16-9) allowed just one run on five hits with seven strikeouts across six innings for his third straight win.

"We stand a really good chance, still being in the division race and the Wild Card, too. I like where we're at," Bumgarner said. "We've turned it on, and it's a good time of year to turn it on. Everybody's starting to come together.

"It's what we have to do to be a winning team. We've got a lot of guys here who know how to win and have done it before, and I feel like we're starting to play our best baseball of the year."

Ryan Braun and Martin Maldonado each hit solo home runs and for the Brewers, who have lost five straight games.

Starter Kyle Lohse (12-8) was tagged with the loss after giving up seven runs on nine hits and two walks over 5 2/3 frames.

"We're still OK," Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said. "We can turn this thing around in a hurry and have a good next series. Then you go on from there. We still have a long ways to go and we know it. You are always disappointed when you have a series like this, especially after playing [the Giants] tough in our ballpark. We just fell apart."

The Brewers opened the scoring in the first. Carlos Gomez and Jonathan Lucroy both singled to place runners at the corners before Braun grounded into a double play that allowed Gomez to score.

San Francisco countered with the trying run in the second and three more in the third.

Sandoval tripled to right to start the second. After two groundouts, Susac hit an RBI double to even the score at 1-1.

In the third, Angel Pagan hit a one-out single, stole second and moved to third on Maldonado's throwing error. Joe Panik walked before Pence's double to center brought in Pagan. Sandoval followed with an RBI single and Michael Morse's sacrifice fly made it a 4-1 game.

The Giants added two more runs in the fifth. Pence doubled on a high pop up that Rickie Weeks lost in the sun in shallow right field with one out in the fifth. Sandoval came up next and demolished a slider to right that landed into the bay after bouncing off the concourse.

Pagan hit an RBI single in the sixth before Maldonado's no-doubter to left off George Kontos with one out in the seventh made it a 7-2 contest.

San Francisco exploded for six runs in the home half. Pence greeted Alfredo Figaro with a triple and later came home on a wild pitch. Sandoval walked and Travis Ishikawa singled to place runners on the corners.

Will Smith took over for Figaro and gave up a two-run double to Andrew Susac, a pinch-hit RBI double to Joaquin Arias and Panik's two-run triple. Pence capped the offensive outburst with an RBI single to right for a 14-2 score.

Braun stroked a solo shot to left in the eighth for his 18th homer of the season, while Ishikawa scored on a Brandon Crawford groundout in the bottom half.

In the ninth, Weeks hit a leadoff double and Maldonado was plunked. Both runners moved up on a passed ball before Gennett hit a pinch-hit RBI single to score Weeks and Maldonado came home on a force out to account for the final score.

Game Notes

Gomez left the game in the third inning with left wrist soreness ... Prior to the game, Milwaukee acquired right-handed reliever Jonathan Broxton from the Cincinnati Reds for two players to be named later ... Pence extended his season-high hitting streak to 13 games ... San Francisco completed its sixth series sweep of the season ... The Giants hold a 4-2 lead in the season series ... San Francisco outhit Milwaukee, 16-9.
