Adams, Taveras lead Cards past Brewers
Sep 7, 2014 - 4:32 AM Milwaukee, WI (SportsNetwork.com) - Matt Adams and Oscar Taveras each hit a two-run home run to lead the St. Louis Cardinals in a 5-3 win over the Milwaukee Brewers in the third of a four-game set.Kolten Wong drove in the other run and Lance Lynn (15-8) won his fourth straight decision as he was charged with three runs -- one earned -- on five hits with four walks and six strikeouts over six innings of work for the Cardinals, who have won seven of their last eight games.
St. Louis now holds a four-game lead over both Milwaukee and Pittsburgh for first place in the NL Central.
"This time of year you want to win every game," said Lynn. "You cold be playing someone else and when they lose it's a big win. We wanted to come in here and get a split no matter what, so this was a big win for us."
Ryan Braun drove in two and Lyle Overbay drove in the other run for the Brewers, who had snapped a nine-game losing streak in Friday's victory. Kyle Lohse (12-9) allowed all five runs on four hits and two walks in just four innings.
"I put us in a hole and we kept battling back, but just didn't come through today," said Lohse. "We only have 20 games left and we look at it as a game we have tomorrow and do the best we can."
The Cardinals jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning as Matt Carpenter drew a leadoff walk and later scored on Adams' 14th home run of the season.
Milwaukee answered in the home half. The inning started with Scooter Gennett reaching base on an error by Adams. Gerardo Parra followed with a double, and Braun hit a single to plate both runners.
St. Louis went back on top in the fourth inning as Jhonny Peralta led off with a single and later scored on Wong's double. Taveras followed with his third home run of the season for a 5-2 lead.
The Brewers got one back in the sixth on doubles from Jonathan Lucroy and Overbay to make it a two-run game.
Sam Freeman got the first two outs of the Milwaukee seventh and Carlos Martinez struck out Braun to end the frame.
Martinez pitched around a two-out double in the eighth inning, and Trevor Rosenthal did the same in the ninth for his 43rd save of the season.
Game Notes
Milwaukee's Rickie Weeks hit a double in the ninth inning for his 1,000th career hit ... St. Louis has won nine of the 15 games with Milwaukee this season ... Milwaukee was just 2-for-12 with runners in scoring position and stranded eight ... Lohse fell to 3-7 in 12 starts against St. Louis.
