Bumgarner shines as Giants rout Mets

Aug 3, 2014 - 10:29 PM Flushing, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Madison Bumgarner was on top of his game after a rough outing in his previous start, leading the San Francisco Giants to a 9-0 win over the New York Mets on Sunday.

Bumgarner (13-8) limited the Mets to just two hits and a walk while striking out a season high-tying 10 in his second career shutout.

"In the bullpen I didn't feel all that great," Bumgarner said. "Felt fine, but I was kind of all over the place. As the game went on, my command got better and I started feeling better."

The southpaw tossed an efficient 94 pitches through nine innings in the win after being tagged for five runs over the first two innings in a 5-0 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates on Monday to snap a three-start winning streak.

Hunter Pence homered twice and drove in four, Buster Posey collected four hits with a homer and three RBI and Brandon Belt added a solo homer in the win.

New York starter Bartolo Colon (10-9) was tagged for six runs on eight hits with five strikeouts over 4 2/3 innings. The six earned runs are the most the 41-year-old right-hander has allowed since May 12 against the Yankees.

"Today, he didn't have his good stuff," Mets manager Terry Collins said of Colon. "It wasn't there today."

New York has mustered eight hits through the first three games of this series that concludes with Monday's matinee.

"We're not putting good swings on the ball," said Collins. "(San Francisco) came in here with good pitching. There are a few guys that need to get going."

A pair of homers helped the Giants to a 3-0 lead after four innings. Brandon Crawford singled to lead off the third and scored two batters later when Pence hit a laser off the railing in left. Belt then got in on the action an inning later with a shot into the camera well down the right-field line.

Bumgarner poked a one-out single to center in the fifth, moved up to second on a passed ball by Anthony Recker and scored on Pence's double to left. Posey then sent an RBI double to the gap in left center, padding the cushion to 5-0. Pablo Sandoval followed with an RBI single up the middle which ended Colon's outing.

San Francisco continued to pour it on in the seventh as Posey cranked a two- run shot to right that made it an eight-run game.

Pence then smashed a solo shot in the ninth before Bumgarner polished off his second complete game of the season and fourth of his career.

Game Notes

Pence now has 10 multi-homer games in his career ... Bumgarner entered the game with a 2-0 record and 1.80 ERA in his last three starts against the Mets ... Colon had his two-start winning streak snapped.
