Final/11
Mets edge Phils in 11 innings
Aug 10, 2014 - 4:58 AM Philadelphia, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - Lucas Duda's single in the 11th sent the Mets to a 2-1 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies on Saturday.Singles from Curtis Granderson and David Wright, coupled with a walk by Eric Campbell, loaded the bases with one out in the 11th. Duda then ripped a single out to right off Antonio Bastardo (5-5) to give the Mets a one-run lead.
"Great job by (Granderson) to get on, (Wright) with a double, (Campbell) with a huge at-bat," said Duda. "I was lucky enough to elevate a ball and sneak it over the second baseman's head."
Ryan Howard singled with two outs in the home half, then Marlon Byrd drew a walk before Jeurys Familia nailed down his second save of the season by getting Domonic Brown to ground out.
Dana Eveland (1-1) registered the win for pitching a scoreless 10th inning.
"It was a good ball game," said Mets manager Terry Collins. "We pitched very, very well the whole game. That was a good grind-out win for us."
Philadelphia's Cole Hamels was in a battle with New York's Dillon Gee prior to the extra frames.
Hamels, who has now given up one run or fewer in five straight starts, allowed a run on five hits and three walks in seven frames.
The starter Gee stifled the Phillies to one run on three hits through seven innings.
The Mets opened the scoring with a run in the fifth. Duda singled to center, Travis d'Arnaud walked and Juan Lagares blooped a single into left that loaded the bases. Wilmer Flores then ripped a hard grounder to third baseman Cody Asche, who made a diving stop and got the force out at second. Duda scored on the play, and Hamels would get Gee to pop out on a bunt attempt which preceded Curtis Granderson's flyout to left.
"It's baseball," said Hamels. "You have to be able to make pitches at the right time. I think Cody made an outstanding catch otherwise I thought there would have been quite a few more runs on the board."
Hamels worked out of a jam in the sixth. With runners at the corners and one out, the southpaw got Duda to roll into an inning-ending 4-6-3 double play.
Philadelphia had been held scoreless for 14 straight innings with Hamels on the mound until Carlos Ruiz tied the game with one swing of the bat in the seventh. Ruiz clubbed a middle-in fastball over the wall in left to tie the game at 1-1 with two outs.
Neither team threatened from there until Duda helped New York win its second game of this four-game set.
