Rays rally past Yankees

Apr 19, 2014 - 6:09 AM St. Petersburg, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - James Loney knocked in four runs, two of which came on a go-ahead single in the seventh inning that propelled the Tampa Bay Rays to an 11-5 come-from-behind victory over the New York Yankees.

Loney had a two-run double earlier, while Wil Myers finished 3-for-5 with three RBI to help the Rays halt a four-game skid and avenge a 10-2 drubbing by the Yankees in Thursday's opener of this three-game set.

"I like to believe this is a definite reboot kind of a game," Rays manager Joe Maddon said.

Tampa Bay overcame a 4-0 deficit by scoring three times in the seventh and five more in the eighth.

Sean Rodriguez tacked on a two-run homer late and Evan Longoria had three hits and scored a pair of runs.

Erik Bedard, taking his first turn in Tampa's injury-plagued rotation, was tagged for four runs on six hits while lasting just 3 2/3 innings, but four Rays relievers held the Yankees to one run the rest of the way.

Scott Sizemore delivered a three-run double and Jacoby Ellsbury went 2-for-5 with a run scored for New York, which had a five-game win streak come to an end. Adam Warren (0-1) took the loss after surrendering three runs in one inning of relief.

The Rays trailed 5-3 with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, but Ben Zobrist's single extended the inning and Desmond Jennings greeted Warren with a pinch-hit single that plated Rodriguez. After a walk to Longoria loaded the bases, Loney singled sharply to right to give Tampa Bay its first lead of the night.

Rodriguez provided some insurance in the eighth, cracking a homer with Ryan Hanigan aboard to extend the margin to 8-5, and the Rays scored three more times on a Brandon Guyer single and Myers' two-run hit before the inning was out.

The eighth also saw New York reliever Cesar Cabral ejected for hitting Logan Forsythe after Myers' single -- the third batter he plunked during the frame.

"Obviously our bullpen has been very good for us and today we had a hiccup," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said.

Jake McGee (1-0) received the win despite allowing a run in 1 1/3 innings of work.

Yankees starter Hiroki Kuroda was touched for three runs over 5 2/3 innings. He faced the minimum through the first three, but struggled in the fourth while carrying a 4-0 advantage.

Longoria followed a two-out walk to Matt Joyce with a single that lengthened the fourth for Loney, who shot a double into the gap in left center to bring in both runners.

The Rays inched closer in the sixth, getting singles from Joyce, Longoria and Myers that brought in another run, though New York reliever David Phelps was able to prevent further damage by retiring Forsythe with two aboard.

New York's bats came back alive in the seventh, however, as Ellsbury singled off McGee and swiped second prior to crossing the plate on an Alfonso Soriano base hit.

The Yankees hit Bedard hard in the second inning to build their early cushion. Singles by Brian McCann and Yangervis Solarte, followed by Kelly Johnson's grounder in which Loney's throw to second hit Solarte in the back, loaded the bases before Sizemore cleared them with double past a diving David DeJesus in deep center.

Sizemore later scored on a Brett Gardner fielder's choice to put New York up 4-0.
