Rangers top Yankees for rare series win
Jul 31, 2014 - 6:41 AM Arlington, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Colby Lewis tossed seven solid innings as the Texas Rangers won their first series in a month by edging the New York Yankees, 3-2, on Wednesday.A 12-11 slugfest won by the Yankees on Tuesday gave way to a surprising pitchers' duel in the finale of this three-game series.
Lewis (7-8) snapped a three-start skid by limiting New York to four hits and two walks, the only costly mistakes coming on solo home runs from Brett Gardner and Jacoby Ellsbury. Lewis retired the final 13 hitters he faced, while Neal Cotts and Neftali Feliz each pitched a perfect inning of relief.
"I feel great, I feel back to 2010, 2011," Lewis said. "I don't have any pain, That's key. It's not a distraction."
The Rangers pushed three runs across in the first inning against Hiroki Kuroda (7-7), who settled in and lasted seven innings but nevertheless took the loss, the Yankees' fourth in five games.
Texas had dropped seven series in a row since taking two of three from the Twins from June 27-29 and was an ugly 1-9-3 in its last 13 home series entering the week.
Gardner led off the game with a home run for the second straight night. It was the fourth long ball of the set for the Yankees outfielder.
The only other run New York mustered came on Ellsbury's solo blast to center in the third, as Texas scored all the runs it needed in its first at-bat.
Shin-Soo Choo led off with a base hit and scored without a throw when Elvis Andrus doubled past a diving Chase Headley at third and into the left-field corner. A groundout moved Andrus to third, and Adrian Beltre singled through a drawn-in infield to knock in the go-ahead run.
With two outs and runners on first and second, Leonys Martin slapped a base hit to left to plate another run, and Lewis and the Texas bullpen took over from there.
Feliz retired the Yankees' 4-5-6 hitters in order in the ninth to collect his third save.
"You come here, try to stay confident and you think that it's going to turn around," said Yankees captain Derek Jeter. "I thought we swung the bats well yesterday; today we didn't. You'd like to get a streak here of some good games where everyone gets hot."
