Rangers use six-run 9th to stun A's
Sep 18, 2014 - 6:08 AM Oakland, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - J.P. Arencibia hit a three-run homer during a six-run ninth inning, sending the Texas Rangers to a 6-1 victory over the Oakland Athletics. After Jeff Samardzija struck out 10 over eight scoreless innings for Oakland, Sean Doolittle took the mound in the ninth. Elvis Andrus hit a one-out single and raced home on Rougned Odor's double to left-center field. Odor went to third on the throw but almost came off the base. After a long review, Odor was ruled safe at third.
Adrian Beltre was intentionally walked prior to Arencibia's blast to left. Robinson Chirinos walked before Jesse Chavez took over for Doolittle. Jake Smolinski and Adam Rosales singled to load the bases. Fernando Abad came in from the bullpen and immediately hit Leonys Martin to force in another run. Elvis Andrus followed with an RBI infield single.
"The guys never gave up," Rangers interim manager Tim Bogar said.
Doolittle (1-4), who had not allowed a run in his previous 15 games, was charged with five runs.
"It happened pretty quickly," A's manager Bob Melvin said.
The Rangers' comeback win gave the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim the AL West title. The Angels, who entered Wednesday's action with a magic number of two, beat the Mariners.
Texas starter Derek Holland allowed one run on four hits while striking out five and walking three over 6 1/3 innings. Robbie Ross (3-6) tossed 1 2/3 scoreless innings to pick up the win.
Samardzija gave up just four hits for the Athletics, who have won three of four.
The A's got on the board in the fifth. Geovany Soto doubled to left-center field, moved to third on Nick Punto's single and raced home on Sam Fuld's base hit to right.
Oakland had a chance to increase its margin in the eighth. With the bases loaded and no outs, Jed Lowrie flied out. Ross came in from the bullpen and recorded the final two outs to keep it a 1-0 game.
"You're trying to get a ball up ... just ended up popping them up," Melvin said.
