Rendon, Nationals rip into Phillies

Aug 3, 2014 - 4:48 AM Washington, DC (SportsNetwork.com) - Anthony Rendon's three-run home run powered the Washington Nationals to an 11-0 win over the Philadelphia Phillies in the third portion of a four-game set.

Every National starter, including pitcher Jordan Zimmermann, had at least one hit and either an RBI or a run scored, with Rendon giving three hits, four RBI and two runs scored for the Nats, who had lost four of five coming in.

Zimmermann (7-5) pitched seven innings and allowed five hits while striking out eight. He also went 1-for-2 at the plate with a run scored and two walks.

"I take pride in everything I do, especially my bunting," said Zimmermann. "If I can get a guy over that's great, and if I can get a walk or hit it's that much better."

A.J. Burnett (6-11) was ejected with two outs in the second inning, but it was enough to lose his third straight decision as he allowed five runs -- one earned -- on three hits and two walks for he Phillies, who had won three of four coming in.

The Nationals worked a quick run across in the first inning as Denard Span led off with a single, stole second and came home on a Rendon base hit to right.

In the second, the Nationals loaded the bases and got a run across on Span's sacrifice fly. Rendon then slammed a 3-1 pitch over the wall in center for a 5-0 lead.

Burnett had appeared to be upset over a pitch during Rendon's at-bat that he felt was a strike, and in the following at-bat, Burnett tossed a pitch to Jayson Werth that was called a ball. He then gestured to home plate umpire Chris Guccione, who promptly ejected Burnett. Philadelphia manager Ryne Sandberg then came out to question the ejection, and was ejected himself by Guccione after heatedly arguing and gesturing.

"You know, he can't get tossed there on his part, but I thought the umpire was a little early there on the ejection," said Sandberg. "So I thought both were wrong out there."

Bryce Harper singled home Ian Desmond in the third inning, and the Nationals put up five more in the fourth to blow the game open.

Werth got the scoring started with a run-scoring single to left, and Adam LaRoche followed with an RBI double. Werth scored on an Ian Desmond sacrifice fly, while Asdrubal Cabrera tripled home a run and scored on a Wilson Ramos single for an 11-0 lead.

The Phillies didn't get a runner past second until the ninth inning, when Carlos Ruiz grounded out to end the game with two in scoring position.
