Phillies rally to beat Wainwright, Cardinals
Aug 23, 2014 - 6:54 AM Philadelphia, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - Ben Revere collected three hits with two runs scored, Ryan Howard had two RBI and the Philadelphia Phillies rallied to beat the St. Louis Cardinals 5-4 in the opener of a three-game set at Citizens Bank Park.Kyle Kendrick (6-11) settled down after giving up three first-inning runs to pitch 6 1/3 frames for Philadelphia, which has won three of its last four games.
Phillies pitchers retired the Cardinals in order in each of the final five innings. Jonathan Papelbon tossed the ninth for his 31st save.
Bumped up to make the start for St. Louis, Adam Wainwright (15-8) surrendered five runs -- four earned -- on six hits, walked three and struck out only two in six innings.
The Cardinals had their winning streak snapped at four games and remain a game-and-a-half behind the NL Central-leading Milwaukee Brewers.
Kendrick has struggled in the first inning this season. Those woes continued on Friday when St. Louis provided Wainwright a 3-0 lead before he took the mound.
The Cardinals opened the game with three straight hits. After Matt Carpenter and Kolten Wong both singled, Matt Holliday found the gap in left-center field for a two-run double. Holliday eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by Jon Jay.
The three runs raised Kendrick's ERA in the first inning to 9.69.
St. Louis went up 4-1 in the third on a home run to deep right field by Matt Adams, but Philadelphia surged ahead with four runs in the bottom of the inning.
The Phillies loaded the bases with no outs on two singles and a walk. Chase Utley had an RBI groundout and Howard, who knocked in a run with a grounder to second base in the first inning, hit an RBI single before Marlon Byrd's sac fly tied the game.
"He got behind and bad things started to happen," said Cardinals manager Mike Matheny on Wainwright in the third inning.
Domonic Brown then walked and got caught in a rundown between second and third base after Carlos Ruiz singled sharply to center, but a throwing error by Adams permitted Howard to score to make it 5-4.
"We got men on base and did the little things to get them in," said Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg.
Philadelphia third baseman Cody Asche helped preserve the lead, making a fine defensive play to initiate a double play that foiled a St. Louis threat in the fourth.

Kendrick has allowed 28 earned runs in the first inning of his 26 starts. He gave up eight hits to the Cardinals ... Jay finished 0-for-3 to end his hitting streak at 12 games ... The Phillies have won 10 of their last 15 home games ... The teams split four games in St. Louis from June 19-22.
