Phils tie game in 9th, prevail in extras

Sep 6, 2014 - 6:10 AM Washington, DC (SportsNetwork.com) - Ben Revere hit a game-tying solo home run in the ninth, then capped a two-run 11th with an RBI single as the Philadelphia Phillies rallied past the Washington Nationals, 9-8, in the opener of a three-game series.

"It's crazy. I wasn't expecting to do something like that," Revere said.

The Nationals sent Craig Stammen (4-5) to the mound in the 11th. Domonic Brown reached second after he hit a fly ball to left-center field that fell between Bryce Harper and Denard Span, who collided with each other. Harper was charged with an error on the play. Brown moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and raced home on Maikel Franco's grounder to first. Craig Stammen then got pinch-hitter Darin Ruf to ground out.

Jerry Blevins came in from the bullpen and Revere greeted him with an RBI single to center. Revere stole second but was caught stealing third.

Jonathan Papelbon took the mound in the bottom half to close out the game. Anthony Rendon walked and Jayson Werth singled to center. Rendon moved to third on Revere's fielding error and scored on Tyler Moore's single to left- center field. Papelbon retired the next two batters to record his 34th save of the season.

Revere went 3-for-5 with three RBI for the Phillies, who have won three of four. Carlos Ruiz and Ryan Howard also homered.

Jake Diekman (4-4) got the win after tossing a scoreless 10th. Philadelphia starter Jerome Williams gave up five runs -- four earned -- on nine hits over five innings.

Adam LaRoche hit a two-run homer and ended with three RBI for the Nationals, who remained seven games ahead of the Braves for first place in the NL East. Rendon finished with two RBI and three runs scored.

Washington starter Stephen Strasburg allowed one run on four hits with five strikeouts over six innings.

Trailing 7-2, the Phillies started their comeback in the eighth. Aaron Barrett put men on the corners with two outs before handing the ball over to Matt Thornton. Chase Utley hit an RBI double to center and Howard followed with a run-scoring infield single.

Philadelphia hit two homers off Rafael Soriano in the ninth to make it 7-7. Brown singled and crossed the plate on Ruiz's blast to left. Revere hit a two- out homer over the wall in right to tie things up.

"(Soriano's) been struggling a little bit, so we'll have to look to land him a little softer, maybe for a few days, and see where we're at," Nationals manager Matt Williams said.

Earlier, the Nationals jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first. Span and Rendon hit back-to-back singles to get things going. It was the 1,000th hit of Span's career. Span was caught stealing third before LaRoche homered to right.

Washington tacked on another run in the fourth. Ian Desmond and Harper hit consecutive one-out singles. Desmond advanced to third on Marlon Byrd's fielding error and scored on Wilson Ramos' sacrifice fly.

The Nationals took a 5-0 lead on Rendon's RBI double in the fifth. Strasburg led off with a single, moved to second on Span's single and raced home on Rendon's hit to right-center field.

The Phillies finally got on the board in the sixth. Pinch-hitter Cesar Hernandez singled and scored on Revere's double to left-center field.

Howard homered off Xavier Cedeno in the seventh.

But the Nationals scored twice off Mike Adams in the bottom half. Span singled and Rendon walked before Werth hit an RBI ground-rule double to right. Cesar Jimenez came in from the bullpen and LaRoche greeted him with a sacrifice fly.
