McCutchen hits inside-the-park homer, Pirates beat Phillies

Sep 11, 2014 - 4:10 AM Philadelphia, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - Andrew McCutchen hit the first inside- the-park home run of his career and the Pittsburgh Pirates were 6-3 winners over the Philadelphia Phillies on Wednesday.

Russell Martin also homered and drove in three runs for Pittsburgh, winners in five of six games after getting swept by the Cardinals in a three-game series. McCutchen, Josh Harrison and Starling Marte all finished with two hits, an RBI and a run scored.

Vance Worley (7-4) gave up three runs in five innings against his former team to earn the win. Four Pirates relievers all pitched a perfect inning of relief, with Mark Melancon taking care of the ninth to pick up his 28th save.

"We have an opportunity to continue to play meaningful games," said Pirates manager Clint Hurdle.

Cody Asche had two of Philadelphia's four hits and a pair of runs scored, while starting pitcher Jerome Williams drove in two runs but struggled on the mound. Williams (3-1) yielded four runs on seven hits in five innings, though he struck out a season-high eight batters.

Williams put himself in an immediate hole, plunking Harrison and Marte with pitches to start the game and giving up a single to McCutchen to load the bases. After Neil Walker went down swinging, Martin drove in a pair of runs with a single to left field.

Asche's two-out double to right in the second led to the first Phillies run, as Wil Nieves followed with an RBI poke to left. Williams gave Philly its only lead two innings later, when his first base hit of the year drove in Ryan Howard and Asche.

McCutchen then tied things with his inside-the-park homer, crushing one off the wall in center that deflected away from a leaping Ben Revere. McCutchen scored standing up. Three pitches later, Martin put the Pirates in front with a solo homer to left-center.

"You wanted to get that shut down inning, and I left two pitches over the plate," said Williams. "I think those are the only two mistakes I made, and they took advantage of it."

The Pirates tacked on two more runs in the sixth. A pair of singles put runners on the corners for Harrison, who went opposite field with an RBI double to right. Marte followed by singling in Andrew Lambo, who pinch-hit for Worley earlier in the frame.

Game Notes

Phillies outfielder Domonic Brown left the game in the sixth inning with a left shoulder injury ... McCutchen's inside-the-park home run was the first against the Phillies since Mets outfielder Angel Pagan on August 23, 2009.
