Marte ruled safe in 9th, Pirates edge Giants
May 7, 2014 - 4:07 AM Pittsburgh, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - Starling Marte's decision to try for home with two outs in the ninth inning paid off, and the majors' new replay system played a pivotal role in a Pittsburgh Pirates win. After Marte blasted a 1-2 offering from Tim Hudson off the wall in right, Hunter Pence gathered the ball and relayed to second baseman Ehire Adrianza, whose throw to third got away from Pablo Sandoval.
Marte took off for home and slid head-first, extending his right arm as the tag was applied by Buster Posey. Home plate umpire Quinn Wolcott called Marte out, but Pirates manager Clint Hurdle challenged the play.
After a review, the umpires determined Marte's right arm touched home plate before the tag.
"That's the kind of baseball we live in I guess nowadays with the replay," said Hudson. "You never know what the outcome is going to be until you get the final conclusion."
Marte went 2-for-4 and scored both Pittsburgh runs as the Pirates edged the San Francisco Giants 2-1 on Tuesday to take the middle test of this three- game set.
Charlie Morton allowed just an unearned run on three hits over eight dominant innings for the Pirates, with Tony Watson (3-0) tossing a scoreless top of the ninth to earn the win.
"I always want to go deep into games," said Morton. "I always want to max out any pitch count that I might have. I always want to get as many innings as I can."
Hudson (4-2) was charged with one earned run on five hits with five strikeouts over 8 2/3 innings.
Both teams put a run across in the second inning.
Brandon Belt beat out an infield single to start the top half for San Fran. He stole second, advanced to third on Tony Sanchez's throwing error and scored without a throw on Adrianza's sacrifice fly to deep center field.
After a pair of singles with one away in the home half, Sanchez grounded out to third as Marte trotted home to tie it.
The Giants nearly broke the draw in the top of the ninth off Watson. Belt and Brandon Crawford singled to put two on with two outs for Adrianza, who popped out to second to end the threat.
The loss ended San Francisco's six-game winning streak.
