Ross fans nine as Padres edge Giants
Apr 19, 2014 - 6:54 AM San Diego, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Tyson Ross had nine strikeouts in eight innings Friday night and the San Diego Padres beat the San Francisco Giants 2-1 to open a three-game series.Ross (2-2) gave up just four hits and a walk, allowing only two baserunners after the fourth inning. He struck out the last two batters he faced -- former MVP Buster Posey and Angel Pagan, San Francisco's best hitter this season.
"Tonight it was there from the get go and it was a lot of fun," Ross said.
Three straight Giants struck out before Brandon Belt golfed a solo homer to right field off Padres closer Huston Street with one out in the ninth inning.
Street walked Hunter Pence, who stole second base, but then fanned Hector Sanchez to pick up his sixth save.
Yasmani Grandal's pinch-hit solo homer off reliever Juan Gutierrez in the eighth inning ended up as the winning run for the Padres, who improved to 5-3 on a 10-game homestand.
Giants starter Matt Cain (0-3) took another loss despite trimming his ERA 1.12 points to 2.88 in four starts. He struck out eight, gave up one unearned run, four hits and two walks and retired 11 batters in a row during one stretch.
San Francisco, coming off a 5-4 homestand, went hitless in nine at-bats with runners in scoring position and left five on base.
"We have to get these bats going, we've been cold these last few games," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said.
Chris Denorfia tripled off Cain in the first inning and was the only runner the Padres had in scoring position in the whole game.
Denorfia scored standing up on a passed ball when Sanchez, the Giants catcher, couldn't handle Cain's 3-1 changeup to Jedd Gyorko.
Game Notes
It was Belt's sixth home run of the season ... Belt, Pagan and Denorfia each had two hits ... The Giants (10-7) have played only NL West foes so far this season ... The Padres lead the majors with four pinch-hit homers this season.
