Spot on: Petit pitches Giants past Padres
Apr 30, 2014 - 5:36 AM San Francisco, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Yusmeiro Petit pitched six scoreless innings as the San Francisco Giants blanked the San Diego Padres, 6-0, in the second matchup of a three-game set.Petit (2-1), who made a spot start for Matt Cain, allowed three hits and struck out four to earn the win. Cain was scratched from his scheduled start after cutting his right index finger.
"Tonight he saved us," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said of Petit. "He used both sides of the plate well and it was fun to watch. To get six innings is always big."
Hector Sanchez had three RBI, while Angel Pagan and Buster Posey both homered in the win. San Francisco has won five of its last six games.
Eric Stults (1-3) took the loss for San Diego after allowing five runs on seven hits with two walks and a strikeout over 2 2/3 innings. The Padres had their two-game winning streak snapped in the setback.
Pagan and Posey belted solo homers around a Hunter Pence groundout in the first inning to stake the hosts to an early lead.
The Giants loaded the bases in the third and Michael Morse grounded into a double play to keep it a two-run game.
Stults then intentionally walked Pablo Sandoval and Sanchez followed with a two-run single to center for a 4-0 lead.
Brandon Crawford laced a single to left that scored Sandoval and helped the Giants to a five-run advantage.
Petit didn't allow a hit until Everth Cabrera knocked a single into center to lead off the fourth inning.
Sanchez added a sacifice fly to left in the fifth to account for the final margin.
