Rangers avoid sweep with win over Mariners
Sep 8, 2014 - 4:32 AM Arlington, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Adrian Beltre's sacrifice fly was all Texas needed as the Rangers avoided a four-game sweep by the Seattle Mariners with a 1-0 victory on Sunday.Leonys Martin finished 3-for-4 with a triple and a run scored for the Rangers, who snapped an eight-game losing streak.
Derek Holland (1-0) earned the win after tossing six scoreless innings, limiting the Mariners to six hits while striking out five batters.
"I wanted to come back out and prove that I can bounce back and make sure that all the hard work I've been doing is going to pay off," said Holland, who suffered a severe knee injury and won his first game since September of 2013. "I've got to give a lot of credit to the staff."
Austin Jackson and Robinson Cano each supplied two hits for Seattle, which had its five-game winning streak come to an end.
"We tried, guys gave good at-bats, (Justin) Smoak hit the ball right on the nose. Actually, we had several balls hit right on the nose," said Mariners manager Lloyd McClendon. "Just wasn't our day. There's no excuses, we lost."
Starter James Paxton (5-2) gave up one run on five hits and two walks over six innings in defeat.
Kendrys Morales hit a leadoff double for Seattle in the second and moved to third on Corey Hart's groundout, but Holland struck out Stefen Romero to leave him stranded.
Texas got two men aboard in the fourth. Adam Rosales got on with a one-out bunt single and Beltre walked, but Paxton got J.P. Arencibia to fly out and Michael Choice to pop up to second.
Martin singled to center in the sixth, stole second, moved to third on Dan Robertson's groundout and came home on Beltre's sac fly for a 1-0 game.
Steve Tolleson allowed just one hit for Texas in a scoreless eighth, but Seattle made things interesting off Neftali Feliz in the ninth. Morales worked a one-out walk and was replaced by pinch-runner Danny Farquhar, who moved to third on Kyle Seager's single.
However, Feliz got James Jones to pop out to short and the pinch-hitter Smoak to fly out to left for his eighth save of the season.
