Angels pound Indians in make-up game

Sep 8, 2014 - 11:57 PM Cleveland, OH (SportsNetwork.com) - Kole Calhoun hit a two-run homer and David Freese connected for a three-run shot to highlight a six-run fifth inning, as the LA Angels of Anaheim crushed the Cleveland Indians, 12-3, Monday afternoon at Progressive Field.

Albert Pujols and Howie Kendrick also homered for the Angels, who have won five straight and 11 of their last 13 games. Pujols, Kendrick and Calhoun each finished with three hits, as LA improved to 5-2 on its 10-game road trip that wraps up with three games in Texas starting on Tuesday.

"Drove four of them out of the park, so that's a real good offensive day for us against a guy who's been really tough," said Angels manager Mike Scioscia.

Kendrick finished with two RBI as the Angels offense supported starter Jered Weaver in a big way.

Weaver (16-8) got the win, allowing three runs on six hits in six innings. The right-hander struck out two and walked two, winning for the fourth time in five decisions.

Lonnie Chisenhall homered and drove in all three runs for the Indians, who had a three-game win streak halted and lost for just the fifth time in 15 games.

The Angels did a bulk of their damage in the fifth inning against Indians starter Danny Salazar. C.J. Cron began the inning with a base hit, moved to third on Hank Conger's single and scored the game's first run on Collin Cowgill's groundout.

Calhoun followed with a homer to make it a 3-0 game. Salazar looked poised to get out of the inning without any further damage after he struck out Mike Trout for the second out, but Pujols singled and Kendrick followed with an infield single, setting the table for Freese's three-run homer for a 6-0 cushion.

"I was getting a little tired," Salazar said.

Salazar (6-7) was then lifted after his worst outing of the season. He was charged with a season-high six runs on eight hits, striking out four and walking two in 4 2/3 innings.

The Indians got two runs back in the home half of the inning on Chisenhall's two-run homer and drew within three runs in the sixth when Chisenhall singled home another run.

The Angels added two more runs in the seventh on an RBI single by Kendrick and a double-play groundout by Freese.

A four-run ninth put the game well out of reach. Pujols hit a three-run shot and Kendrick followed with a homer of his own to account for the inning's scoring.
