Astros top Angels in rubber match
Apr 20, 2015 - 3:09 AM Houston, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Luis Valbuena hit a two-run homer and Scott Feldman tossed six strong innings to lift the Houston Astros to a 4-3 win over the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in the rubber match of a three-game set.Jose Altuve supplied three hits and a run and Jason Castro had an RBI single for the Astros, who were coming off a 4-0 shutout of the Angels on Saturday.
Feldman (1-2) surrendered just two runs on six hits with three strikeouts.
"He got stronger and stronger and I thought his best inning was probably his last," Astros manager A.J. Hinch said of Feldman.
Albert Pujols and C.J. Cron each homered for the Angels. Garrett Richards (0-1), who started the season on the disabled list after rupturing the patellar tendon in his left knee last August, gave up four runs -- three earned -- on five hits and four walks in five innings.
With two outs in the fifth, George Springer singled and Evan Gattis walked. Jed Lowrie struck out on a wild pitch and catcher Drew Butera's throwing error allowed Lowrie to reach first and Springer to score. Gattis rounded third on Castro's infield single to give the Astros a 4-2 lead.
Springer had a two-run blast overturned in the seventh as his fly ball was ruled to be just right of the right-field foul pole.
Pujols pulled the Angels within a run by crushing a slider to left for a solo shot with two outs in the eighth.
Luke Gregerson tossed a scoreless ninth for his second save of the season.
Richards didn't get off to the start he wanted after loading the bases with one out in the first. He escaped unscathed by striking out Lowrie and inducing a Castro groundout to first.
The Astros started the scoring in the third. Altuve led off the frame with a base hit and Valbuena smacked a first-pitch fastball to left-center field for a two-run blast.
After David Freese got aboard with a one-out single in the fourth, Cron homered to left to tie the game at 2-2.
