Brewers slip by Reds late, avoid sweep

Apr 24, 2015 - 2:51 AM Milwaukee, WI (SportsNetwork.com) - Jean Segura knocked in the go-ahead run in the bottom of the seventh inning, allowing Milwaukee to claim a 4-2 decision over Cincinnati in the finale of a four-game set.

Adam Lind finished with a solo homer among his three hits while Aramis Ramirez also went deep for the Brewers, who avoided a sweep.

"Absolutely," Segura said when asked if a win despite a series loss provided relief. "When you win, you have good momentum and a good feeling. That's baseball. When you have those negative games, you have to keep battling until you win."

Kyle Lohse (1-3) gave up two runs on three hits while striking out four over seven innings. Francisco Rodriguez closed out the contest on a scoreless ninth to post his second save.

Marlon Byrd's two-run homer in the fifth accounted for the only meaningful offense by the Reds, who came into the series having dropped four in a row.

Kevin Gregg (0-2) was charged with the deciding run over his 1 1/3-inning relief stint. Homer Bailey worked the first 5 2/3 frames, allowing seven hits and a pair of runs.

"I certainly think we can't just clean house because of playing 16 games where we've struggled a bit out of that role," Reds manager Bryan Price said of his bullpen. "That said, we've got to pick it up, we've got to be better. We have to come in throwing strikes and challenging the opponents and being more efficient."

The Brewers moved ahead by a run in the home seventh. Logan Schafer worked a leadoff walk, moved up on a sacrifice and scored two batters later when Segura laced a single to center.

"It was right down the middle. I just tried to stay short, not try to do too much and hit the ball hard," Segura said of Gregg's fateful pitch.

Segura swiped second and went to third on a wild pitch, but was stranded when Elian Herrera fanned swinging. Jonathan Broxton followed by striking out the side in the top of the eighth.

Ryan Braun and pinch-hitter Jason Rogers singled in the home eighth, before Braun stole third and was allowed to score when Reds third baseman Kris Negron failed to grab catcher Tucker Barnhart's throw.

Rodriguez gave up a two-out double to Zack Cozart then induced a game-ending grounder to second from Joey Votto.

Lind's second-inning homer put the hosts on the board, but a two-run blast to center from Byrd in the fifth also brought in Brandon Phillips for a 2-1 Reds edge.

Ramirez tied the game with his leadoff shot in the home half.

Milwaukee had dropped eight in a row overall ... Braun finished with two hits ... Both teams are in action Friday, as the Brewers continue their homestand against St. Louis and the Reds return home to open up a six-game residency against the Cubs.
