Mets top Marlins in under two hours
Apr 28, 2015 - 1:36 AM Miami, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - There wasn't much offense throughout the game between the New York Mets and the Miami Marlins. But the two teams saved the best for last.
Daniel Murphy's three-run homer in the ninth inning lifted the Mets to a 3-1 win over the Marlins in the opener of a three-game series on Monday night.
"Murphy has reviewed some stuff, worked on some things," Mets manager Terry Collins said. "It was Dan's night."
New York starter Dillon Gee and Miami's Jarred Cosart dueled throughout the evening and the Marlins were the first to crack the scoreboard, albeit in the eighth inning.
Gee began the eighth with a groundout of Ichiro Suzuki and a strikeout of Adeiny Hechavarria. Pinch-hitter Justin Bour then singled and Dee Gordon followed with a base hit. Prado made it three hits in a row with a single to center that plated pinch-runner Reid Brignac.
Carlos Torres (1-0) relieved Gee and induced an inning-ending popout from Giancarlo Stanton.
The Mets, who dropped two of three to the Yankees over the weekend, responded in the ninth off Miami closer Steve Cishek (0-1). Juan Lagares doubled to lead off the inning before Lucas Duda worked a walk. After Michael Cuddyer popped out to shallow right, Murphy blasted his second homer of the season into right center that gave the New York the lead.
"It was just poor execution," Cishek said. "It's tough, especially how well we have been playing."
Jeurys Familia worked the ninth for his ninth save of the season. Familia struck out Marcell Ozuna, then Murphy made a shoestring catch on a grounder before getting Michael Morse at first and J.T. Realmuto grounded out to shortstop to end the game.
Miami had its five-game winning streak snapped.
