Tigers hold on to beat Twins

Apr 28, 2015 - 3:53 AM Minneapolis, MN (SportsNetwork.com) - Jose Iglesias went 3-for-5 and finished a double shy of the cycle in the Detroit Tigers' 5-4 win over the Minnesota Twins on Monday.

Yoenis Cespedes hit a three-run homer in the first inning to back a solid outing from David Price (2-1), who allowed three runs on six hits and two walks with seven strikeouts over 6 1/3 innings.

Price was coming off a forgettable outing against the New York Yankees in his last start when he surrendered eight runs on 10 hits in 2 1/3 frames.

"We probably got away with one tonight, quite frankly. We made some mistakes, but ultimately we were able to get the win," Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said.

Detroit, which has won three straight, has outscored the Twins 27-5 in four wins this season. The Tigers swept them in the opening series of the year.

Tommy Milone (2-1) took the loss for Minnesota after he yielded five runs on eight hits in four-plus innings.

Brian Dozier had an RBI and scored a run, while Danny Santana, Kurt Suzuki and Trevor Plouffe each knocked in a run for the Twins.

"It wasn't a good start to the game for us. The Tigers came up and put up a four-spot right out of the chute," Twins manager Paul Molitor said. "We kept pecking away and were able to contain them after the second inning."

Milone was clobbered in the first inning. Ian Kinsler led off the game with a deep drive to center that was caught just before the warning track by Jordan Schafer, then Iglesias ripped a line-drive homer to left that opened the scoring.

After Miguel Cabrera flied out to deep right, Victor Martinez singled to center, J.D. Martinez worked a walk and Cespedes hit his fourth homer of the season to chase them home and stake Price to a 4-0 lead before he even touched the mound.

Dozier led off the home first with a double, originally ruled foul before a successful Minnesota challenge, and scored on Plouffe's two-out single to center.

Detroit added on in the second inning when Hernan Perez and Anthony Gose got on ahead of Kinsler, who grounded into a double play that allowed Perez to cross home.

Santana doubled to begin the fifth, moved over on a passed ball by Alex Avila and hustled home on Dozier's sacrifice fly to right.

Iglesias led off the seventh with a triple, but he was gunned down at the plate by Shane Robinson two batters later after Victor Martinez flied out to left.

The Twins pushed another run across in the seventh and the eighth to cut their deficit to one. Schafer poked a one-out double to right in the seventh and scored on Santana's single off Iglesias' glove at shortstop. Joe Mauer then led off the eighth with a double and trotted home from third on Kurt Suzuki's two-out base hit to left.

Joakim Soria worked around a leadoff single from Schafer in the ninth to record his eighth save of the season.
