Twins down Tigers
Apr 29, 2015 - 6:22 AM Minneapolis, MN (SportsNetwork.com) - Danny Santana had three hits and Kurt Suzuki finished 2-for-2 with the winning RBI in the Minnesota Twins' 3-2 win over the Detroit Tigers on Tuesday.Mike Pelfrey (2-0) was strong yet again for Minnesota, yielding just a pair of runs -- one earned -- on three hits over seven innings. He also struck out seven batters, a total he hasn't reached since Sept. 6, 2013.
Pelfrey has only given up two earned runs over his last 19 innings.
"That's a pretty good team over there," Pelfrey said of the Tigers. "You don't get many breaks... The guys did a good job of fighting in there and pulling it out."
Anibal Sanchez (1-3) took the hard-luck loss after surrendering all three runs over seven innings.
"He was a little wild today," said Tigers catcher Alex Avila. "Lot of life on his fastball. It was a step in the right direction for him."
Minnesota trailed 2-1 through six innings but got to Sanchez in the home seventh. Eduardo Nunez started the deciding two-run rally with a single to center and scored on Eduardo Escobar's two-bagger. After Oswaldo Arcia went down swinging, Suzuki ripped a single to center to score Escobar.
Casey Fien pitched a 1-2-3 eighth for Minnesota, and Glen Perkins retired the side in order in the ninth to pick up his sixth save.
Both pitchers were perfect through two. Pelfrey cracked first, walking Avila to start the top of the third inning and allowing him to score on an Anthony Gose single three batters later.
The Twins answered a half-inning later on Santana's RBI single up the middle.
Consecutive two-out doubles in the fourth by J.D. Martinez and Yoenis Cespedes gave the Tigers their 2-1 lead.
