Haren, Marlins silence Phillies
May 3, 2015 - 1:11 AM Miami, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - Dan Haren coasted through six innings and Martin Prado hit a three-run homer to lead the Miami Marlins to a 7-0 win over the Philadelphia Phillies on Saturday.Haren (3-1) scattered four hits across six scoreless innings and struck out four while walking none. Prado broke the game open with his second-inning home run and added an insurance run with an RBI double later in the game.
"We were able to get a bunch of runs," said Haren. "I just tried to pound the strike zone the best I could and let the defense work."
Dee Gordon, the league's leader in hits, was 3-for-3 to improve his average to .440 on the season. He scored three runs and reached base five times.
Cole Hamels (1-3) turned in his worst start of the season for Philadelphia, allowing a season-high six runs on 10 hits and three walks in six innings with six strikeouts.
"I want to win and I want to get the opportunity to win," said Hamels. "It hasn't been the case because of what I've been doing."
Phillies hitters totaled just six hits.
Hamels was in trouble from the beginning. With runners on the corners and no one out in the first, he helped himself by throwing Gordon out as he came home on Giancarlo Stanton's chopper back to the mound. After Marcell Ozuna singled to load the bases, Hamels escaped with strikeouts of Jeff Baker and J.T. Realmuto.
He could not get out of trouble in the second. He had two outs and a runner on second when he walked Gordon and Prado made him pay with his second home run of the season to give the Marlins a 3-0 lead.
Miami tacked on a run in each of the next two innings. Baker and Realmuto hit back-to-back doubles in the third and Stanton's sacrifice fly in the fourth scored Gordon after he stole second base and advanced to third on a wild pitch.
Two innings later, Prado doubled home Gordon to put the Marlins up 6-0. In the seventh, Ozuna greeted reliever Dustin McGowan with a single and moved up to third on Chase Utley's throwing error. He scored on a Realmuto single.
While Philadelphia's staff stumbled through eight innings on the mound, Miami's was hardly threatened. A pair of singles followed by a wild pitch gave the Phillies two runners in scoring position in the third, but Odubel Herrera lined out to end the inning. In the fourth, Grady Sizemore was stranded after a two-out double.
