Miller, Braves blank Phillies

May 6, 2015 - 3:13 AM Atlanta, GA (SportsNetwork.com) - Shelby Miller fired his third career shutout and the Atlanta Braves blanked the Philadelphia Phillies 9-0 in the second of a three-game set.

Miller (4-1) struck out eight, scattered just three hits and walked one for Atlanta, which has won three of its last five games.

"We had some awkward swings, and not too many good looks at him," Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg said.

Miller has not surrendered more than two runs in any of his first six starts since being acquired in the package that sent Jason Heyward to St. Louis.

"Obviously, it has started off well but at the same time you have to keep being motivated going forward," Miller said.

Freddie Freeman smacked a two-run homer among his three hits and three runs scored and Kelly Johnson added a three-run shot in the triumph.

Chad Billingsley's (0-1) first start in two years didn't go as planned. He allowed six runs -- five earned -- on eight hits and a walk over five innings for the Phillies, who were seeking their third straight win.

Billingsley had not started in the major leagues since April 15, 2013 with the Los Angeles Dodgers. The right-hander chose not to have surgery for a partially torn ulnar collateral ligament following the 2012 season and toed the rubber just twice after getting plasma injections. He then underwent Tommy John surgery and tore a flexor tendon in his elbow during rehab.

The Braves jumped out to a 6-0 lead after plating a pair of runs in the first and four more in the fourth.

Andrelton Simmons hit a one-out single in the opening frame before Freeman launched his two-run shot to right.

Freeman and A.J. Pierzynski singled to begin the fourth and Freeman scored when Cody Asche couldn't handle Jonny Gomes' bouncer to third. Johnson then cracked his three-run blast into the seats in right-center.

Atlanta added three runs in the seventh. Johnson worked a bases-loaded walk and Jace Peterson and Cameron Maybin lined RBI singles to make it 9-0.

Johnson posted a pair of hits and drove in four ... Billingsley had been 2-3 with a 3.38 ERA in eight career starts against the Braves coming in ... The Dodgers declined Billingsley's option in October ... The Braves were 3-for-12 with runners in scoring position, while Philadelphia finished 0-for-3.
