Chavez helps A's down Twins
May 6, 2015 - 3:16 AM Minneapolis, MN (SportsNetwork.com) - Jesse Chavez tossed 7 1/3 strong innings and the Oakland Athletics defeated the Minnesota Twins 2-1 in the second of a four-game set.Chavez (1-2) struck out seven and allowed an unearned run on just four hits and a walk for Oakland, which has alternated wins and losses over its last six games.
Tyler Clippard fired a scoreless ninth to notch his third save.
Trevor May (2-2) surrendered two runs on five hits and two walks over 5 2/3 frames for the Twins, who had a five-game winning streak snapped.
The A's opened the scoring in the first and added an insurance run in the sixth.
Billy Burns singled to lead off the game, stole second and raced home two batters later when Billy Butler rolled a single through the hole on the right side.
Stephen Vogt worked a two-out walk in the sixth and Ike Davis ripped a single into right-center off Brian Duensing, who replaced May. Brett Lawrie then bounced a base hit through the right side of the infield to plate Vogt.
Minnesota didn't put a runner into scoring position until the seventh and finally cracked the scoreboard in the eighth on Brian Dozier's one-out RBI single.
Game Notes
Burns went 2-for-5, while Butler finished 2-for-4 ... The Twins were attempting to win six in a row for the first time since an eight-game run in June of 2011 ... Oakland went 2-for-8 with runners in scoring position, while Minnesota finished 1-for-5.
