Buehrle ends epic drought against Yankees

May 7, 2015 - 3:38 AM Toronto, ON (SportsNetwork.com) - Four hits from Chris Colabello helped Mark Buehrle end an 11-year winless drought against the New York Yankees and the Toronto Blue Jays to a 5-1 victory at Rogers Centre.

Colabello finished 4-for-4 with an RBI and Russell Martin had three hits, including a solo homer, to enable the Blue Jays to take the rubber match of this three-game set. Ezequiel Carrera contributed a two-run single for Toronto.

Buehrle (4-2) lasted only five innings but held the Yankees to a run on six hits to best his nemeses for the first time since April 10, 2004. That previous win was the veteran's lone one in 15 career decisions against New York prior to Wednesday.

"I didn't miss many bats, but this time I pitched out of jams," Buehrle remarked. "I may have made some bad pitches but I got away with it."

While Buehrle was able to stop his slide, CC Sabathia's personal winless stretch lingered on after the Yankee hurler was reached for four runs on nine hits over 6 1/3 innings.

Sabathia (0-5) has now been dealt seven losses in nine starts since defeating Boston on April 24, 2014.

"I'm just good enough to lose right now," Sabathia said afterward.

Handed an early 1-0 lead, Sabathia gave it up in the second inning by getting into trouble when Kevin Pillar reached on a bunt single and Colabello followed with a double to left. Carrera put the Blue Jays in front two batters later with a sharp single that sent both runners home.

A balk by Sabathia helped Toronto increase its advantage in the fourth. The miscue preceded a single by Colabello that brought in Martin, who had reached on a leadoff infield hit.

Sabathia set the Jays down in order in the fifth, but Martin hammered a mistake pitch into the home bullpen an inning later to extend the lead to 4-1.

Buehrle, meanwhile, got off to a shaky beginning, yielding a single to Chris Young and a double to Alex Rodriguez that put two in scoring position in the first inning. The crafty lefty limited the damage by getting Mark Teixeira to bounce into a run-scoring groundout, then kept the Yankees off the board over the next four frames.

New York did have its chances against Buehrle. Jose Pirela doubled to begin the third but was erased on Jacoby Ellsbury's grounder to short. The Yankees loaded the bases with two outs in the fifth before Teixeira grounded out to end the threat.

"You've got to be aggressive there," said Teixeira of the at-bat. "You want to try and get something up in the zone, which I did, but he keeps you off balance and I was out in front of it,"

Toronto's bullpen shut New York down the rest of the way, with Roberto Osuna, Aaron Loup and Brett Cecil combining to allow just one hit over the final four innings.

Game Notes

Colabello, recalled from Triple-A Buffalo on Tuesday, went 6-for-8 with two RBI over the final two games of the set ... The Yankees had won five consecutive series prior to this one ... Pirela went 2-for-4 after being activated from the 15-day disabled list before the game. Fellow infielder Gregorio Petit, who suffered a right hand contusion when hit by a pitch in Tuesday's contest, was placed on the 15-day DL to make room ... Ellsbury extended his hitting streak to nine games with a single in the fifth ... The Blue Jays recorded at least one double for a 26th straight game.
