Brewers use five-run first to beat Dodgers
May 7, 2015 - 5:05 AM Milwaukee, WI (SportsNetwork.com) - Scooter Gennett and Adam Lind each hit two-run homers as the Milwaukee Brewers defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers, 6-3, in the third of four at Miller Park.Wily Peralta (1-4) gave up three runs -- two earned -- on seven hits with six strikeouts over eight innings of work for Milwaukee, which has won four of its last five.
"To me it was just easy, effortless, and great life in the zone," Brewers manager Craig Counsell said of Peralta's outing. "He just did it with ease tonight, and that's what was very encouraging to me."
Martin Maldonado and Jean Segura knocked in the other runs for the Brewers.
Joc Pederson hit a pair of homers in the loss, while Joe Wieland (0-1) was touched up for six runs on six hits and four walks in 4 2/3 innings in his Dodger debut. Weiland spent the 2012 and 2014 seasons with the San Diego Padres and was dealt to Los Angeles in the Matt Kemp trade.
"Going in I thought that this was going to be a good day. I fell behind in the first and when that happens (in the MLB) and you don't make a pitch, you get into trouble," Wieland said.
After Los Angeles went down in order in the first, Milwaukee pounced all over Wieland in the home half.
Carlos Gomez sent a single into right to begin the frame and he trotted home on Gennett's first homer of the season for a 2-0 lead. Ryan Braun followed with a walk and Lind delivered his fifth homer of the year to extend the margin. Maldonado then contributed an RBI single later in the frame to stake the Brewers to a 5-0 lead after one inning.
Justin Turner came home with a single after Jean Segura committed a throwing error on an Andre Ethier grounder in the fourth and Pederson trimmed the deficit to 5-2 with a solo homer in the fifth.
Milwaukee got one back in the home fifth when Segura walked with the bases loaded to force in a run.
Pederson went deep with one out in the eighth to get the Dodgers back within three, but Francisco Rodriguez came on in the ninth and nailed down his sixth save of the season.
Game Notes
The Dodgers outhit Milwaukee 8-7, but they went 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position ... Weiland has lost his two career starts against the Brewers.
