Padres again turn to Despaigne in opener with Diamondbacks

May 7, 2015 - 2:27 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Odrisamer Despaigne steps into the rotation on Thursday when the San Diego Padres open a four-game series with the Arizona Diamondbacks at Chase Field.

Despaigne filled in for an injured Ian Kennedy earlier in the year and now will take the place of hard-throwing right-hander Brandon Morrow, who went on the disabled list earlier this week with shoulder inflammation.

One of his two starts this season came against Arizona back on April 14. Despaigne won that contest and surrendered a run and two hits in seven innings. He actually won both of his starts and allowed three runs in 13 2/3 innings.

Despaigne, who is 2-2 in five starts versus the D-backs, is 2-0 overall on the year with a 2.95 ERA in six appearances.

San Diego salvaged the finale of its three-game series with the San Francisco Giants on Wednesday, as Kennedy worked seven solid innings and three different players knocked in a pair of runs to help the Padres to a 9-1 win.

Alexi Amarista finished with three hits and two RBI and Jedd Gyorko added two hits, two runs scored and drove in two. Austin Hedges also plated two for the Padres.

San Diego, which had lost 6-0 and 2-0 to open the set, scored for the first time since an 8-6 win to close out a series with the Rockies three days prior.

"We were due. We think we're going to hit and we hit," Padres manager Bud Black said. "Our guys came in with an edge."

Kennedy (2-1) allowed a run on six hits while striking out five and failing to issue a walk.

Arizona, meanwhile, swept a doubleheader from Colorado on Wednesday, taking the first game, 13-1, before winning game two, 5-1.

Robbie Ray won his regular-season debut in the second game, as he held the Rockies to just five hits and a run over six innings.

"He really rose to the occasion," Arizona manager Chip Hale said of Ray.

Paul Goldschmidt hit a solo homer and knocked in two runs after Aaron Hill and Mark Trumbo homered in the opener. Hill had six hits in the doubleheader.

On Thursday, Arizona will hand the ball to righty Rubby De La Rosa, who is 2-2 with a 5.40 ERA. De La Rosa lost his second straight decision on Friday in Los Angeles, as the Dodgers reached him for five runs and three hits - two home runs - in five innings.

San Diego took two of three from the Diamondbacks earlier in the season.
