Upton homers in 12th to send Padres over Diamondbacks
May 10, 2015 - 4:54 AM Phoenix, AZ (SportsNetwork.com) - Justin Upton homered leading off the 12th inning to send the San Diego Padres to a 6-4 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks Saturday night. It was a game in which the Padres blew a two-run lead in the ninth inning, but then used sparkling defense to send the contest to the 11th frame.
Upton, who spent his first six major league seasons with the Diamondbacks, lined a 3-2 offering from Randall Delgado (1-2) over the wall in left-center. Alexi Amarista singled in Yangervis Solarte later in the inning.
Kevin Quackenbush (1-0) fanned three over the final two innings to get the win.
Tyson Ross allowed five hits and a pair of runs while fanning six over six innings in the start of the Padres, who have taken the last two contests of this four-game series.
Chase Anderson yielded five hits and a run over seven frames for the Diamondbacks.
"To get seven out of him we're happy," Diamondbacks manager Chip Hale said. "Maybe we should have left him in. He had only 93 (pitches)."
Despite retiring the first two batters in the home ninth, Craig Kimbrel failed to close the door. Jordan Pacheco walked and moved to second on an errant pickoff throw. Pinch-hitter Aaron Hill singled to right. Danny Dorn, who toiled in the minor leagues for nine-plus seasons and 939 games, finally got his first RBI at the major league level. Facing an 0-2 count, the pinch-hitter ripped a low liner into the right-field corner to tie the game.
Two great defensive plays sent the game to the 11th inning. With runners on first and second, Amarista made a diving stop on a grounder up the middle. He stepped on second, but the throw to first was late to get David Peralta. Second baseman Jedd Gyorko then nabbed Cliff Pennington's sharp liner and Peralta was doubled off first base.
"Our guys, they hung in there. It looked dire there in the 10th. We'll remember this one," Padres manager Bud Black said.
Anderson's single to center plated Pacheco for a 2-1 Arizona edge in the fifth.
Gyorko, in a pinch-hit role, doubled off Oliver Perez leading off the eighth. Brad Ziegler, who hadn't allowed a run in 12 of his previous 13 appearances this season, recorded two quick outs, before Solarte tied it with a bloop hit toward the left-field line. Derek Norris then sliced a hit down the right- field line.
Upton added to the lead when his singled to left in the ninth scored Wil Myers, who led off with a double off Addison Reed.
Matt Kemp's sacrifice fly got the Padres on the board in the opening inning, and Peralta evened the contest in the fourth when his hit to left went past a diving Upton.
Game Notes
The Padres placed first baseman Yonder Alonso on the 15-day disabled list Saturday with a bruised right shoulder and recalled outfielder Abraham Almonte from Triple-A El Paso ... San Diego went 4-for-17 with runners in scoring position and left 12 men on base.
