Hernandez reaches 2,000 Ks as Mariners sweep A's

May 11, 2015 - 6:00 AM Seattle, WA (SportsNetwork.com) - Felix Hernandez passed 2,000 strikeouts in his career as he helped the Seattle Mariners wrap up a three-game sweep of the Oakland Athletics in a 4-3 victory on Sunday.

Hernandez (6-0) became the fourth youngest player in MLB history to reach 2,000 strikeouts at 29 years and 32 days. He gave up two runs on five hits with a walk and six strikeouts in seven innings to stay undefeated over seven starts this season.

"The accolades just keep coming and coming with this guy," Seattle manager Lloyd McClendon said

Dustin Ackley drove in two while Kyle Seager and Robinson Cano finished with an RBI each for the Mariners, who have won four of their last six.

Marcus Semien hit a pair of solo home runs and Stephen Vogt also had a solo homer for the Athletics, who have lost their last five. Jesse Chavez (1-3) allowed four runs on five hits while walking two and striking out seven.

"It's Felix Hernandez -- he's going to do that to a lot of teams this year," Vogt said of Hernandez's dominant outing.

Oakland took the initial lead in the game on Semien's two-out solo homer in the third, but Seattle went on top in the fourth.

Hernandez recorded his 2,000th career strikeout in the fifth when he got Sam Fuld looking.

Rickie Weeks led off with a walk and Nelson Cruz singled two batters later to put runners at the corners. Seager then doubled in Weeks, and Ackley doubled home Cruz and Seager for a 3-1 lead.

The Mariners added a run in the fifth on Cano's sac fly that scored Jesus Sucre, who led off with a single and moved to third on Seth Smith's double.

Semien's second home run of the game, a leadoff shot in the sixth, made it a 4-2 game.

Vogt hit a one-out solo homer off Fernando Rodney in the ninth to make it a one-run game, but the closer got the next two batters out for his ninth save of the season.

Game Notes

Seattle hosts San Diego for a two-game set starting Tuesday ... Only Bert Blyleven, Sam McDowell and Walter Johnson reached 2,000 at a younger age ... Oakland hosts Boston for three games starting on Monday.
