Brewers hold off White Sox

May 12, 2015 - 6:26 AM Milwaukee, WI (SportsNetwork.com) - Elian Herrera and Khris Davis saved the Brewers from blowing the opener of a three-game interleague series with the White Sox, as their homers in the eighth inning sent Milwaukee to a 10-7 win.

After Milwaukee's bullpen squandered a 7-2 lead, Herrera broke a tie game by taking Zach Duke (1-2) deep to left for a two-run blast. Davis followed with a pinch-hit solo shot, and Francisco Rodriguez earned his seventh save with a scoreless ninth inning.

Carlos Gomez did a little bit of everything in the Brewers' third straight win. He homered, tripled, drove in two runs, scored twice and prevented Chicago from going ahead with an over-the-shoulder grab in the eighth.

"We battled," Brewers manager Craig Counsell said. "You have to find different ways to win."

Adam Eaton had four hits and two RBI for Chicago and tied the game with a run- scoring single in the eighth. Still, the White Sox dropped their seventh straight on the road and fell to an MLB-worst 2-12 as the visitor.

Chicago's near comeback took away a win from Wily Peralta, who went six innings and limited the Sox to two runs on Geovany Soto's home run in the fifth.

Peralta worked out of a bases-loaded jam after Soto's homer to keep the Brewers ahead 6-2, and Gomez showed off his speed to get one of those runs back in the bottom half.

Gomez sliced a line drive into the right-field corner and was on his way third when Avisail Garcia's relay throw got away. Gomez broke for home, and replay confirmed his head-first slide at the plate narrowly beat Soto's tag.

The run was the last of seven allowed by Jeff Samardzija, though only five of those were earned. The right-hander labored through six innings and gave up eight hits while striking out six and walking one.

"You want to play clean games from beginning to end," Samardzija said. "We definitely need to not make this hard on ourselves."

A three-run seventh inning off Milwaukee's bullpen, aided by a Scooter Gennett error, cut Chicago's deficit to 7-5. Gennett's miscue left runners on the corners with one out, and Eaton brought home Soto with a single. Jose Abreu added two more runs with a base hit, and the White Sox opened the eighth with three straight hits.

Adam LaRoche, pinch-hitting for Soto, singled in Conor Gillaspie, and Eaton singled through the left side off Jonathan Broxton (1-0) to tie the game. With two outs and runners on first and second, Melky Cabrera sent a deep fly ball to center field that Gomez tracked down and snagged to avoid further damage.

A single and an error set the stage for Milwaukee's three-run first inning. Gerardo Parra scored on Adam Lind's fielder's choice, and Ryan Braun, who reached on an Alexei Ramirez error, trotted home when Gomez crushed Samardzija's hanging breaking ball over the wall in left-center.

Parra doubled in a run and scored on a Braun single in the second, and back- to-back doubles by Elian Herrera and Hector Gomez puts the Brewers up 6-0 in the fourth.

Game Notes

The Brewers have gone 8-4 after starting the season 4-17 ... Samardzija, who fell to 0-5 in his last five starts against the Brewers, returned from a five- game suspension stemming from his part in a brawl with the Royals on Apr. 23 ... Abreu accounted for three of Chicago's 14 hits.
