Mesoraco gives Reds walk-off win over Braves

May 13, 2015 - 5:28 AM Cincinnati, OH (SportsNetwork.com) - Devin Mesoraco's pinch-hit, RBI double in the ninth inning gave the Cincinnati Reds a 4-3 win over the Atlanta Braves in the second of a three-game set.

In the ninth with one out and Jason Grilli (0-2) on the mound, Brayan Pena hit a single to right and Mesoraco followed with a double to the corner in left. Pinch-runner Michael Lorenzen was able to hustle all the way around the bases and cross the plate for the win.

"I've never done that before, it was my first walk-off hit," said Mesoraco. "I was just thankful I got a good pitch to hit and I was ready and put a good swing on it."

Todd Frazier smacked a two-run home run and Marlon Byrd also drove in a run for the Reds, who snapped a three-game losing streak. Anthony DeSclafani pitched six innings and allowed three runs on seven hits. Aroldis Chapman (2-2) pitched a scoreless ninth for the win.

Nick Markakis, Kelly Johnson and Alberto Callaspo each drove in a run for the Braves, who have dropped four of their last five. Mike Foltynewicz allowed three runs -- two earned -- on six hits in 6 2/3 innings.

"We left a lot of guys on base tonight," said Atlanta manager Fredi Gonzalez. "You've got to get the hits when the guys are on base and we didn't do a good enough job of it tonight."

The Reds jumped on top in the first inning as Joey Votto worked a two-out walk and Frazier followed with his 11th home run of the season for a 2-0 lead.

Atlanta, though, answered in the third to tie the game. With one out, Andrelton Simmons and Freddie Freeman singled before Johnson ripped a double that scored Simmons and left Freeman on third. Callaspo followed with a sacrifice fly to tie the game.

The Braves then took the lead in the fourth after Jace Peterson doubled to lead off and scored when Markakis doubled three batters later.

Cincinnati tied the game in the seventh as Pena led off with a single and moved to second on Zack Cozart's bunt that saw Foltynewicz throw the ball away at first, leaving everyone safe. A sac bunt from Billy Hamilton put both runners in scoring position, and Byrd followed with a sac fly. Luis Avilan then took the mound and got Votto to ground out.

Game Notes

Atlanta went just 2-for-13 with runners in scoring position and stranded 12 ... Hamilton was caught stealing for the second time this season ... Eric Stults pitches for Atlanta on Wednesday, and Raisel Iglesias takes the mound for Cincinnati.
