Teheran, Braves top Marlins

May 16, 2015 - 4:03 AM Miami, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - Julio Teheran battled through 5 2/3 innings and helped himself at the plate in the Atlanta Braves' series-opening 5-3 win over the Miami Marlins.

Teheran only yielded two runs -- one earned -- despite allowing nine hits and a walk with five strikeouts. In the second inning, he drove in a pair of Atlanta runs to give his team its first lead.

Phil Gosselin and Todd Cunningham added three hits apiece for Atlanta, and Cody Martin (2-2) was handed the win despite allowing the Marlins to even the score in the seventh.

"I got a couple knocks early and kept hitting them," said Cunningham. "I wish they were all this easy."

Giancarlo Stanton crushed a pair of solo home runs for Miami, which got three more hits from Dee Gordon. David Phelps was charged with three runs -- one earned -- on nine hits in six innings with eight strikeouts and no walks, and Mike Dunn (0-2) took the loss.

After Brandon Cunniff recorded the last out of the sixth to get out of a jam, Atlanta called on Martin to pitch the seventh. Stanton greeted him by hammering the second pitch he saw to center field to tie the score.

Miami's bullpen, though, returned the favor. Nick Markakis doubled with one out, and Andrelton Simmons hit an infield single to put two runners on base. Cunningham singled in the go-ahead run, and Simmons eventually scored when Christian Bethancourt struck out on a wild pitch that catcher J.T. Realmuto could not secure.

"I think they tallied each time we scored," said Marlins manager Mike Redmond. "It's tough to win ballgames when you can't shut them down."

The Marlins had their best chance to get back in the game in the home half of the eighth when Realmuto led off with a double, but Jim Johnson battled back to retire the next three to prevent any damage. In the ninth, Jason Grilli recorded his 10th save after working around a one-out walk to Stanton.

Gordon, the league leader in hits in the young season, started the game off with an infield single. After he advanced to second on a Teheran error and to third on Stanton's groundout, he scored on Marcell Ozuna's single.

Adeiny Hechavarria's error in the second loaded the bases, but Phelps appeared poised to get out of the jam when Bethancourt grounded out for the second out. Teheran then singled home two runs against his counterpart to put Atlanta up 2-1.

Stanton tied the game in the third with a towering solo home run to left- center, but Atlanta moved back in front a half inning later when Cunningham and Cameron Maybin opened the inning with back-to-back doubles.

Game Notes

With 61 hits, Gordon is tied with Rod Carew and George Sisler for second all- time in hits through 33 games. Hank Aaron is first with 66 ... Phelps has faced 158 batters without allowing a home run this season ... Miami was 1- for-13 with runners in scoring position while Atlanta was 4-for-19.
