Alonso, Kemp help Padres rally past Reds
Jun 6, 2015 - 11:45 PM Cincinnati, OH (SportsNetwork.com) - Yonder Alonso tied the game in the seventh inning with a grand slam and Matt Kemp put the Padres in front in the eighth with a two-run single as San Diego rallied for a 9-7 win over the Cincinnati Reds in the second of a three-game set.Derek Norris hit a two-out single before Justin Upton and Kemp worked walks against Ryan Mattheus in the seventh. Tony Cingrani came on and served up the grand slam to Alonso, whose towering shot to right-center barely cleared the wall and tied the game at 7-7.
Pinch-hitter Abraham Almonte led off the eighth with a double against Jumbo Diaz (2-1), who struck out Jedd Gyorko and Will Venable. He then walked Norris and Upton before Kemp bounced his single through the hole on the left side to bring home Almonte and Norris to give the Padres a 9-7 lead.
Kemp also smacked a solo homer among his three hits and five RBI and Alonso tallied three hits and four RBI for the Padres, who have won four straight games.
Brandon Maurer (2-0) tossed a scoreless seventh to record the win and Craig Kimbrel struck out Zack Cozart with runners on the corners in the ninth to notch his 13th save of the season.
Todd Frazier posted three hits and three RBI, Cozart cracked a solo shot and Joey Votto scored a trio of runs for Cincinnati, which has dropped four of its last five contests.
"Those things aren't going to happen too often," Reds manager Bryan Price said of the disappointing loss.
Earlier, Frazier's two-run double and Brayan Pena's run-scoring two-bagger in the opening frame preceded Cozart's two-out blast in the third that bounced off the scoreboard in left for a quick 4-0 Reds advantage.
San Diego cracked the scoreboard in the fourth on Kemp's shot into the front row of seats in right, but Cincinnati added two more runs in the home half. Votto's RBI triple and Frazier's run-scoring double extended the margin to 6-1.
The Padres got two runs closer in the fifth following Kemp's two-run double, but Jay Bruce's RBI single in the sixth upped the spread to 7-3. Frazier was thrown out at the plate to end that inning.
