Rosario leads Rockies' rout of Marlins

Jun 7, 2015 - 2:08 AM Denver, CO (SportsNetwork.com) - Wilin Rosario's two home runs and seven strong innings from Chris Rusin led the way in the Colorado Rockies' 10-5 drubbing of the Miami Marlins at Coors Field.

Rusin (2-0) impressed in his second start of the season, holding the Marlins to a pair of runs on seven hits and racking up a career-best eight strikeouts -- including four of Miami slugger Giancarlo Stanton.

The left-hander was backed by a Colorado offense that teed off on Marlins starter David Phelps. Rosario finished 3-for-5 with three RBI and three runs scored, Carlos Gonzalez belted a three-run homer and Nolan Arenado added a two-run triple in the rout.

Colorado pounded out 17 hits on the afternoon, with Charlie Blackmon and DJ LeMahieu each recording three along with two runs scored.

Phelps (2-3) was battered for nine runs and 11 hits before being lifted with two outs in the fourth.

Jeff Baker had two hits and a pair of RBI for Miami, which took Friday's opener of this three-game series and had won three in a row coming in. Marcell Ozuna went 3-for-5 with a run scored in the loss.

Following a 71-minute rain delay prior to the game's start, the Rockies came out swinging against Phelps. Five of the first six Colorado hitters reached base in the opening inning, with singles by Blackmon and LeMahieu preceding Arenado's opposite-field triple that quickly staked the home team to a 2-0 edge.

After Arenado came home on a Rosario base hit, Michael McKenry laced a triple into the right-field corner to extend the lead to 4-0.

Miami got a run back in the second on singles from Ozuna, Jeff Mathis and Adeiny Hechavarria, then had a chance to move closer when Martin Prado scorched a triple off the center-field wall with one out in the third.

Rusin fanned the dangerous Stanton, however, then retired Baker to keep it a three-run game.

"(Rusin) did a great job on the mound, keeping guys off-balance and getting quick outs," Gonzalez said. "For us, offensively, just jumping right out of the gate is important. That's how this team is built. We know we can produce a lot of runs."

The Marlins did convert a leadoff double in the fourth from Ozuna, who was brought in on a groundout from Mathis to trim the margin to 5-2. Rosario had extended Colorado's lead an inning earlier with his first homer of the day.

Miami got no closer, though, as the Rockies knocked Phelps around again in their half of the fourth.

Rusin helped his cause with a bunt single, advanced on a Blackmon base hit and crossed the plate on LeMahieu's single up the middle. Two batters later, Gonzalez launched a first-pitch curve into the visitor's bullpen to put an end to Phelps' rough afternoon.

"I think I made three quality pitches all day, and it was the first at-bat to Carlos Gonzalez. That was really it," said Phelps of his outing. "Really just a terrible game."

Andre Rienzo came on in relief and was greeted by Rosario's line-drive blast to left that increased the lead to 10-2.

Rusin kept it that way by working out of another jam in the sixth. A single from Baker, a walk and an error by Rockies shortstop Daniel Descalso loaded the bases for Miami with one out, but Hechavarria's hard line drive was snared by Descalso and pinch-hitter Donovan Solano bounced into a force play.

The Marlins put up three runs off Rafael Betancourt in the ninth to make the final score more respectable. Hechavarria tripled and scored on Ichiro Suzuki's pinch-hit groundout, and Baker drove in Stanton and Dee Gordon with a two-out single.
