Bumgarner Ks 11 as Giants top Phillies

Jun 7, 2015 - 1:43 AM Philadelphia, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - Madison Bumgarner allowed his second career grand slam, but he was efficient otherwise to lead the San Francisco Giants in a 7-5 win over the Philadelphia Phillies on Saturday.

Bumgarner (7-2), who served up Jeff Francoeur's second career slam in the fourth inning, surrendered five runs and struck out 11 over his eight-inning, 98-pitch outing. The reigning World Series MVP also collected two hits with an RBI on the offensive end.

"Strange game," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. "(Bumgarner) threw well. A couple of hiccups, but it's hard to believe he gave up five runs the way he threw."

Nori Aoki went 3-for-3, reached base in all five of his plate appearances and knocked in two for the Giants, who have won the first two of this three-game set following a five-game losing streak.

Severino Gonzalez (2-2), making his first career start at Citizens Bank Park, was knocked around for six runs on seven hits with five strikeouts over 2 2/3 innings.

"We need length from our starting pitchers. Some of our bullpen guys have pitched a lot," Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg said. "To get length out of the starters is very important going forward."

Gonzalez, who threw 32 pitches in the first inning, hit Aoki to lead of the game and Joe Panik reached by drilling a liner off the pitcher to put a pair of runners on. Gonzalez stayed in the game and served up an RBI single to Angel Pagan in the next at-bat, then Buster Posey struck out swinging for the first out before Brandon Belt lifted a sacrifice fly to deep center that scored Panik. After plunking Brandon Crawford, Gonzalez sent the Phillies to bat by getting Matt Duffy to pop out to first baseman Darin Ruf.

By contrast, Bumgarner needed just eight pitches to retire the Phillies in order in the home first, and six to get through the second.

The Giants alternated strikeouts and singles over the first four batters of the third. Duffy then stepped in and ripped a sharp single into left that was deflected by Maikel Franco at third, allowing Posey to score from second. Gonzalez pushed another run across later in the inning on a balk.

San Francisco loaded the bases after Bumgarner's hard-hit infield single that ended Gonzalez's day, and Aoki kept the two-out hits coming with a two-run single up the middle off reliever Dustin McGowan for a 6-0 lead.

Philadelphia got something going against Bumgarner, who faced the minimum through three innings, with the first three hitters of the fourth reaching base. After Ruf went down swinging, Francoeur blasted his grand slam over the wall in left to cut the Phillies deficit to 6-4.

Bumgarner settled down from there and helped his cause in the seventh with an RBI single up the middle to extend his lead to 7-4.

Pinch-hitter Andres Blanco tagged his first homer of the season in the home eighth, but Bumgarner struck out the next two hitters to end the frame.

"Bumgarner really pounded the zone (and) mixed his pitches," Sandberg said. "(He threw) a high percentage of strikes."

Santiago Casilla pitched around a one-out walk to pinch-hitter Chase Utley, striking out the final two batters he faced, to record his 17th save of the season.
