Red Sox get the best of A's once more
Jun 7, 2015 - 3:11 AM Boston, MA (SportsNetwork.com) - Joe Kelly tossed six solid innings and Hanley Ramirez ended 3-for-5 with a two-run homer and two runs scored as Boston doubled up Oakland, 4-2, in the middle test of a three-game series from Fenway Park.David Ortiz and Mike Napoli each knocked in a run for the Red Sox, who have won two in a row and four of their last six.
Kelly (2-4) gave up a run on four hits with six strikeouts and two walks, winning for the first time since April 11. Koji Uehara closed things out with a scoreless ninth to notch his 13th save.
Mark Canha homered and Billy Burns drove in the other run for the Athletics, who had won four in a row prior to this weekend set.
Jesse Chavez (2-6) allowed 10 hits and four runs despite fanning five over his unsuccessful five-frame outing. Oakland fell to 6-24 in games decided by two runs or fewer, worst in the majors.
"We're in so many games and however we get there, you get tired of tipping your cap," Athletics manager Bob Melvin said. "Many of these games that we're in, no matter if we look bad early on, we come back to be in position."
Chavez was in trouble only three batters into the contest Brock Holt singled with one down and Ramirez reached the batter's eye in deep center for a 2-0 game.
A Burns triple plated Eric Sogard in the third to put the A's on the board, but Ortiz scored Ramirez on a double off the Green Monster in the home half and came in when Napoli followed with a single for a 4-1 game.
"When Ramirez and David are both producing in the middle of the order, it gives us a completely different look," Boston manager John Farrell noted.
Kelly exited after exactly 100 pitches, but his offense failed to extend the lead despite loading the bases in the home half. Alexi Ogando entered only to serve up a one-out solo shot over the Green Monster by Canha and the visitors were within 4-2 in the seventh.
Ogando walked Ben Zobrist to kick off the eighth, then Tommy Layne and Matt Barnes combined to hold Oakland off the board in the inning. Uehara had it easier in the final frame, retiring the side in order.
Game Notes
Kelly has allowed two or fewer earned runs in six of his 11 starts this year ... Ramirez collected at least three hits in one contest for the fourth time this season and first since May 19 ... Oakland has lost eight straight games when scoring three runs or fewer, since dropping a 6-4 decision at Houston on May 19.
